PSU Oil Stocks Surge as Crude Falls Below $80 Amid Geopolitical Easing

State-Owned Oil Companies Rally on Margin Recovery Hopes

Shares of major state-owned oil companies, including Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL), traded in the green early on Monday. The rally was fueled by a decline in crude oil prices, which has raised optimism regarding a potential recovery in fuel marketing margins for these firms.

HPCL saw a notable increase, trading above 1 percent in early deals. IOC and BPCL also managed to gain, with both stocks rising approximately 0.5 percent. This movement brought the Nifty Oil & Gas index up by 0.43 percent. The sector outperformed the broader benchmark of Nifty 50, which rose by 0.37 percent.

Global Crude Prices Drop as Geopolitical Tensions Ease

The surge in PSU oil stocks occurred against a backdrop of falling global crude prices. Brent crude descended below $80 per barrel. This drop came after U.S.-Iran talks concluded in Switzerland, an event that alleviated concerns regarding potential disruptions to global oil supply chains.

Brent was reported down nearly 2 percent at $79.04 a barrel. Earlier during the trading session, Brent had briefly climbed past $82, making the recent decline particularly significant for the commodity market.

Analyst View: Profitability Prospects Temper with Caution

While brokerages are anticipating an improvement in the earnings cycle for the oil sector, they maintain a note of caution regarding the outlook. Experts highlighted that the financial health of these companies remains intrinsically linked to fluctuations in oil prices.

The sectoral performance is also closely tied to domestic policy decisions impacting the industry. Brokerages suggest that while the current trends are positive, continued vigilance and risk assessment remain paramount for investors.
