
Government Plans to Train 1.5 Lakh Multiskilled Caregivers to Strengthen India’s Care Ecosystem
Post-Budget Webinar to Focus on Expanding Care Economy and Skilling Initiatives
New Delhi, March 8: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will host a breakout session aimed at strengthening India’s care ecosystem as part of the ongoing Post-Budget Webinar series, according to an official statement released on Sunday.The session will focus on developing 1.5 lakh multiskilled caregivers to address India’s growing domestic demand for care services while also tapping into emerging global opportunities in the care economy.
Initiative Linked to Union Budget 2026–27 Vision
The discussion will revolve around implementing the vision outlined in the Union Budget 2026–27, which highlighted the need to build a strong care ecosystem covering geriatric and allied care services.As outlined in the budget speech, the government plans to introduce a range of training programmes aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). These programmes will equip caregivers with both core caregiving competencies and allied skills such as wellness support, yoga practices, and the operation of medical and assistive devices.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced that 1.5 lakh caregivers would be trained in the coming year under these initiatives.
Stakeholders to Discuss Training Standards and Workforce Development
The upcoming webinar will serve as a collaborative platform where healthcare experts, state governments, international organizations, and academic institutions will deliberate on implementation strategies.Key areas of discussion will include standardizing caregiver qualifications, strengthening trainer capacity, improving training infrastructure, and expanding apprenticeship opportunities in the sector.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship also emphasized efforts to facilitate workforce mobility for trained caregivers by aligning Indian skill standards with global benchmarks.
Strengthening the National Skilling Ecosystem
India’s broader skilling ecosystem is being strengthened to meet the evolving needs of the care economy. Institutions such as the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), Sector Skill Councils (SSCs), Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) are playing a key role in this effort.According to the ministry, thousands of candidates have already been trained in caregiving roles including Geriatric Caregiver, Home Health Aide, and General Duty Assistant, laying the foundation for a structured workforce in the care sector.
