Only Finance Minister to Present Nine Consecutive Budgets
Sitharaman presented her ninth consecutive Budget on February 1, becoming the only finance minister to have delivered nine Budgets in a row. She is now one short of the overall record of 10 Budgets presented by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.Desai had presented six Budgets during his tenure as finance minister from 1959 to 1964 and later delivered four more between 1967 and 1969. However, those presentations were not consecutive within a single uninterrupted tenure.
Historical Context of Budget Presentations
Among other former finance ministers, P. Chidambaram presented nine Budgets, while Pranab Mukherjee delivered eight. Both served under different Prime Ministers during their respective tenures. The Prime Minister’s remarks place Sitharaman’s consecutive record in a broader historical context, underlining its importance in India’s fiscal and parliamentary journey.
