US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth Holds Tense Meeting With Anthropic CEO
Mumbai, February 24: US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly summoned Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, to the Pentagon for what has been described as a high stakes and tense meeting over the military use of the company’s Claude artificial intelligence model.According to a report by Axios citing an anonymous senior defence official, the interaction was not friendly. The discussion centered on restrictions embedded within Anthropic’s technology, which the Defence Secretary has reportedly urged AI firms to reconsider.
$200 Million Pilot Contract and Safeguard Dispute
Claude is currently the only AI system deployed within classified defence networks under a $200 million pilot contract signed last year. In a memo dated January 9, Hegseth asked AI companies to renegotiate terms to remove restrictions tied to their models. However, Anthropic is said to have maintained its position and refused to fully lift certain safeguards. These include restrictions related to mass surveillance of Americans and limitations on the development of fully autonomous weapons.
Despite mounting pressure, a spokesperson for Anthropic described the discussions as productive.
Risk of ‘Supply Chain’ Designation and Contract Fallout
Defence officials reportedly warned that Anthropic could face designation as a supply chain risk. Such a move would potentially void existing contracts and restrict other Pentagon partners from using the Claude AI model.Replacing Anthropic is considered complex due to Claude’s deep integration into classified defence systems, according to the report.
Pentagon Expands AI Partnerships With xAI and Google
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has signed agreements with xAI, founded by Elon Musk, and is nearing a deal with Google for its Gemini model, as reported by The New York Times. These developments are seen as adding competitive pressure on Anthropic.Ahead of the Pentagon meeting, Anthropic alleged that three Chinese AI firms had used chatbots to siphon millions of Claude outputs to train their own models.
Musk Accuses Anthropic of Data Theft
Elon Musk responded on X, accusing Anthropic of stealing training data on a massive scale and claimed that the company had paid multi billion dollar settlements for alleged theft. He also referred to the company as “MisAnthropic.”What Is Claude AI?
Claude is a next generation AI assistant developed by Anthropic and designed to be safe, accurate, and secure. The system is positioned as an enterprise grade solution capable of automating legal document reviews, compliance checks, sales planning, marketing campaign analysis, financial reconciliation, data visualization, SQL based reporting, and enterprise wide document search. As tensions rise over AI governance, defence integration, and data ethics, the Pentagon’s evolving partnerships signal a competitive and strategically sensitive phase in the adoption of advanced AI systems within classified military networks.
