New Delhi, January 6, 2026: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has taken over operational control of Well Mori-5 in the Mori field following the incident at the site, with senior management and technical experts now directly overseeing containment and safety operations.

The company’s Director (Technology and Field Services), Vikram Saxena, along with members of the Crisis Management Team, has assumed charge at the well located in Irusumanda village of Malkipuram mandal. The intervention marks a shift to direct, on-ground management as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.

Fire Control and Containment Measures Progress

Excavation work has been completed to create a temporary canal from a nearby irrigation source, enabling the deployment of high-capacity firewater pumps. Fire pumps have already reached the well site, and installation activities are currently underway. A comprehensive blowout control plan has also been finalised and put into action.

According to the latest operational update, a gradual reduction in flame intensity and size has been observed. The response team has also successfully altered the flame direction to a vertical orientation, a key step in improving control and safety at the site.

Environmental Monitoring Underway

Continuous monitoring of air quality, noise levels, and nearby water bodies is being carried out within a 600-metre radius of the well to minimise environmental impact. These measures are aimed at ensuring that surrounding areas remain protected as containment operations progress.

ONGC stated that it remains in close coordination with district and police administrations as well as local authorities to ensure an effective response and smooth ground-level execution. All activities at the site are being conducted with an emphasis on safety and environmental care.
