Nuclear Power Milestone Reached as India Advances Infrastructure Development; US Trade Talks Intensify

A significant milestone has been achieved in India’s clean energy sector, while major developments occur in national aviation and bilateral trade negotiations. The fifth unit of a key nuclear power project reached a crucial construction phase, complementing global discussions surrounding the bilateral trade framework between the US and India.

Nuclear Power Project Reaches Key Milestone

The fifth unit of the 1,000MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu marked a major industrial milestone on Monday. The erection of the reactor pressure vessel inside the reactor building for the project's fifth unit was completed, according to Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). Current indications suggest that this fifth unit is slated to become operational towards the end of this year.

NPCIL stated that the successful erection of the vessel demonstrates committed progress toward completing Unit 5 and reinforces NPCIL’s commitment to the clean energy transition. The reactor pressure vessel, which houses the nuclear fission reaction and serves as the heart of a nuclear power plant, was erected following clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

Aviation and Trade Deal Advancements

The National Capital Region (NCR) saw its second international airport established when IndiGo’s inaugural Lucknow-Noida flight landed on Monday morning. The flight, which marked the culmination of a nearly two decade project, put the code DXN onto India's aviation map. The first service drew 175 passengers aboard the 186 seater aircraft, registered VT-IOM.

Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to hold talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal next week to provide “final touches” to the first tranche of the bilateral trade deal. The meetings are scheduled for June 23 and 24 in New Delhi, focusing on finalizing the framework agreement and the larger trade agreement.

Airport Authorities Examine Compensation Options

In response to repeated incidents involving aircraft flying at low altitude near Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), airport authorities are actively exploring methods to provide compensation to affected homeowners from the airport’s CSR funds. This is the third time within a year that tiled houses near CIAL have been damaged by "low flying flights."

While airport sources noted that CIAL is not legally obligated to pay compensation for damage caused by low flying aircraft, the authorities stressed they would consider ways to give compensation on humanitarian grounds. The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) will be asked to submit an immediate report regarding the issue.
