Nirmala Sitharaman Norway Visit: FM to Meet PM Jonas Gahr Store, Hold Talks With Finance and Trade Ministers

Finance Minister to Engage With Norwegian Leadership, CEOs and Indian Diaspora in Oslo

New Delhi, February 16: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to begin a two day visit to Oslo, where she will meet senior Norwegian leadership, hold bilateral discussions, and engage with business leaders and the Indian diaspora.

During her visit, Sitharaman will meet Jonas Gahr Store, Prime Minister of Norway. She will also hold bilateral meetings with Norwegian Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Minister for Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth.

The Ministry of Finance stated that the engagements will also include a roundtable discussion with Norwegian CEOs and investors. Sitharaman is expected to interact with start ups at the Oslo Science Park and connect with members of the Indian community during a diaspora event.

Focus on Trade, Investment and Innovation

The Oslo visit follows Sitharaman’s engagements in Germany, where she met top leaders and industrialists to discuss bilateral trade relations, particularly in the context of the India EU Free Trade Agreement.

In Munich, she met Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals. Svendsen highlighted the long standing relationship between Maersk and India and outlined key investments and partnerships across India’s maritime ecosystem.

He also conveyed the company’s intent to expand its engagement in India. During the discussion, Svendsen appreciated India’s reform initiatives, including deregulation and improvements in ease of doing business, and referred to key announcements in the recent Budget, including container manufacturing.

The two sides also discussed the recently concluded India EU FTA and its potential to open up Indian and European markets, along with possible benefits for businesses on both sides.

Germany Talks Highlight Bilateral Cooperation

Sitharaman also met Lars Klingbeil, Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance of Germany. The meeting included discussions on the January meeting in India between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which strengthened bilateral cooperation in defence, trade and technology.

Klingbeil described the Free Trade Agreement as a significant step for trade and investment ties between India and Germany. He also focused on bilateral development cooperation and metro rail expansion projects in India.

Sitharaman briefed Klingbeil on the success of India’s digital payment systems and expressed willingness to share best practices related to India’s digital stack.

Meetings With Liechtenstein Leadership

During her Munich visit, Sitharaman also met Brigitte Haas, Prime Minister of Liechtenstein, and Alois Philipp Maria, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein.

The series of engagements across Norway and Germany underline India’s continued diplomatic and economic outreach in Europe, with a focus on trade, investment, technology cooperation and business expansion.
