Nifty Extends Losing Streak as Metal and Auto Stocks Weigh In; Consumer & Media Stocks Rally Amid Global Cautiousness

Indian equity markets continued a cautious trading pattern on August 14, with benchmark indices facing headwinds primarily due to selling pressure in metal, automotive, and IT sectors. Despite the overall downward trend, bargain hunting in specific consumer durables, media, and telecom stocks managed to limit the decline in the indices. Investors maintained a wary stance as markets navigated concerns over elevated crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Index Performance and Market Overview

At market close, the Sensex recorded a slight dip of 70.71 points or 0.09 percent, settling at 78,009.25. The Nifty also saw marginal losses, shedding 29.85 points or 0.12 percent to end at 24,366.

On a weekly basis, both indices registered losses, with the BSE Sensex declining by 0.6% and the Nifty losing 0.8%. Broader market segments also underperformed, as the Nifty midcap index fell 0.5 percent and the smallcap index declined 0.7 percent.

Sectoral Trends and Economic Indicators

The trading day saw mixed sectoral performances. Auto, energy, FMCG, metal, pharma, and realty sectors collectively experienced downturns of 0.3% to 1%. This was contrasted by consumer durables and media stocks, which both gained nearly 1%.

A positive note for the broader market came from a marginal easing in July wholesale inflation, which stood at 9.78%, down from 9.87% recorded in June. These nuances helped cushion some of the losses seen across the benchmark indices.

Individual Stock Movers and Corporate News

Several large-cap stocks experienced volatility. Amongst the biggest gainers in Nifty were Apollo Hospitals, Bharti Airtel, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, and Wipro. Conversely, stock decliners included Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle, Jio Financial, ONGC, Hindalco, and SBI.

Individual stock movements showed sector-specific strength. Honasa Consumer shares rose 5% following robust Q1 earnings. Welspun Living jumped 2% after reporting an 83.6% surge in Q1 profit.

Sector Highlights and Global Company Actions

LG Electronics India surged by 10% after announcing a 27.2% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase in Q1 profit. MAN Industries gained 3% after being included in QatarEnergy’s Preferred Manufacturers List (PML). Natco Pharma shares, however, slipped 4% as its profit dipped 57%.

Nearly 160 stocks achieved a 52-week high during the session. Stocks among those reaching peaks include Aether Industries, Pidilite Industries, and One 97 Communications (Paytm), highlighting strong individual stock performance across multiple micro sectors.

Currency Market Dynamics

The Indian rupee ended flat against the dollar at Rs 95.43 per dollar on Friday, a marginal shift from the previous close of Rs 95.44. This stability in the currency market provided some basis support amid sectoral volatility.
