Nifty 50 Closes Near Key Levels: Can Broader Index Surge Past 24,300 amid Consolidation Trend?

On August 20, the Indian equity markets saw continued movement within crucial psychological and technical zones as the Nifty 50 rallied 154 points (0.64 percent) to close at 24,232. The Bank Nifty also showed strength, surging 256 points (0.45 percent) reaching 57,496. Market sentiment remained positive, with a strong market breadth registering 1,842 advancing shares compared to 1,228 declining shares on the NSE.

Navigating Nifty 50: Indicators and Outlook

Following a prolonged 12-session corrective phase, analysts note that Nifty is stabilizing near the critical 24,000 psychological zone. This stabilization has been partially supported by the formation of a Morning Star type pattern, suggesting easing selling pressure, though sustained follow-through above 24,300 remains essential for confirming a reversal.

Near-term strategies emphasize a 'buy on dips' approach while the index holds support levels. Key resistance areas are set at 24,300, 24,500, and 24,620. For downside support, immediate key zones include 24,180, 24,040, and 23,900. The RSI at 48.33 is showing signs of recovery, a fact supported by the India VIX remaining supportive at 10.76.

Nifty Derivatives: Support Bases and Call Hinges

In derivatives trading, the structure suggests that while rallies might be capped by open interest at 24,500 and 25,000, the 24,000 Put positioning provides a strong underlying support base. One suggested strategy is the Bull Put Spread for the August 25 expiry, designed to capitalize on mild bullish movement.

This spread involves selling one lot of 24,500 PE at Rs 231 while buying one lot of 24,300 PE at Rs 98. This setup carries disciplined risk management parameters, with a maximum Mark-to-Market (MTM) loss capped at Rs 4,355 and a target profit set at Rs 8,645.

Another viewpoint suggests the index is likely to trade within a range of 24,000 to 24,350, with the near-term bias remaining sideways until a decisive breakout occurs. The Put Call ratio (PCR) standing at 1.10 indicates strong underlying support provided by significant Put writing at the 24,200 strike.

Bank Nifty Consolidation: Key Levels and Strategic Approach

Bank Nifty is currently undergoing a phase of consolidation, with signs suggesting that buying momentum lacks decisive follow-through despite previous highs. The immediate focus rests on the crucial reversal level of 57,700; a sustained move above this mark could drive momentum towards 58,000 to 58,268.

From a technical perspective, the index formed a small bodied Doji candle, reflecting indecision despite recent recovery efforts. Support is clearly defined in the immediate zone of 57,000 to 57,200, while resistance extends across the critical range of 57,700 to 58,800. Analysts suggest that the index will likely remain within the near term band of 57,000 to 57,880.

Banking Sector Dynamics and Futures Trading Advice

Sectoral analysis revealed selective buying interest within the banking space during the session. Private bank stocks provided relative strength and support for Bank Nifty, contrasting with marginal weakness observed in Public Sector Unit (PSU) banks. A recovery across PSU Banks remains necessary for broader sector participation.

Bank Nifty August Futures are seen moving inside a descending channel pattern, indicating underlying corrective pressure. For traders, the current setup favors a buy on dips strategy. Key support zones are defined at 57,200 and 57,000. A disciplined approach suggests initiating long positions once the index crosses above the 57,700 to 57,050 zone, with vital stop loss levels placed below 57,500.
