
Centre Announces Rs 100 Crore Integrated Aqua Park Project in Anantnag to Boost Fisheries and Employment
Project Aims to Strengthen Aquaculture Infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir
Srinagar, March 14: Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on Saturday announced a Rs 100 crore Integrated Aqua Park Project in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at strengthening aquaculture infrastructure and generating employment opportunities in the region.Singh, who holds the portfolios of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (FAHD) and Panchayati Raj, made the announcement during the National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries organized by the Department of Fisheries in Srinagar.
The conference was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Union Minister of State for FAHD and Panchayati Raj S P Singh Baghel.
Focus on Cold Water Fisheries and Trout Production
According to the minister, the Integrated Aqua Park Project in Anantnag will help improve aquaculture infrastructure, promote the development of cold water fisheries, enhance fish production, and support employment generation in the region.Singh highlighted the need to scale up trout production and strengthen the income of cold water fish farmers by increasing productivity, expanding value addition, and tapping export markets where these species have strong demand.
Emphasis on Value Chain Development
The Union Minister emphasized the government's focus on developing a complete value chain in cold water fisheries. This includes enabling regions with cold water resources to produce, process, and market trout and other fish species more efficiently with access to modern infrastructure and improved market connectivity.He also urged the organization of fish farmers through cooperatives and encouraged states and union territories to assist farmers in accessing government schemes, infrastructure support, and credit facilities.
Model Guidelines for Reservoir Fisheries Released
During the event, Singh, along with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, jointly released the Model Guidelines for Reservoir Fisheries and Aquaculture Management.The guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for managing reservoir fisheries and aquaculture. They include provisions related to scientific seed stocking, cage and pen based aquaculture, leasing and governance mechanisms, biodiversity conservation, value chain linkages, and monitoring systems.
