
NUPPL Begins Coal Production at Pachwara South Block in Jharkhand
Coal Output Starts to Support Power Generation Needs
New Delhi, March 29 Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited, a joint venture between NLC India Ltd and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, has commenced coal production at the Pachwara South Open Cast Project in Jharkhand, according to a regulatory filing.The start of production marks a significant step in boosting domestic coal availability for power generation, aimed at strengthening India’s energy security amid rising electricity demand.
Production Timeline and Project Milestone
The company stated that coal production began on March 29, 2026, following the commencement of overburden removal on December 19, 2025.In its filing to the BSE, NLC India confirmed that the Pachwara South Open Cast Project has now successfully transitioned into the production phase.
Coal Supply for Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant
Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited, established to develop coal-based thermal power projects, will utilize the coal from this block primarily for its 3x660 MW Ghatampur thermal power plant located in Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh.The Pachwara South coal block, situated in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, was allocated to the company by the Ministry of Coal to meet the fuel requirements of this power project.
Coal Reserves and Mining Capacity
The coal block, which was previously unexplored, has now been fully explored by the company through detailed drilling across the entire area.It holds extractable reserves of 264.84 million tonnes, with a normative mining capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum. The average grade of coal from the block is classified as G10.
