Capsules Business and Strategy
Sunil Mundra, Executive Director, commented that Q1 FY27 was a strong operational quarter for the capsules business. He noted that while reported numbers are not directly comparable to the previous quarter—which involved dispatching deferred inventory following a Puducherry plant shutdown—the underlying business delivered healthy performance.Management attributed the success to sustained demand and improved realization rates, enabling them to navigate rising input costs through timely pass-throughs to customers. The gelatin capsule segment specifically demonstrated healthy margins.
The company noted that operational efficiency was impacted by the implementation of a new ERP system towards the end of the quarter, which caused a brief disruption to billing and dispatch cycles. These sales were pushed into Q2. Separately, depreciation of the rupee provided a meaningful tailwind to export realizations.
In the HPMC segment, however, demand in the US market remained erratic due to uncertainty surrounding duty structures, and there were no material US export volumes during the quarter. To optimize capacity utilization and protect profitability, the company made the pragmatic decision to temporarily convert one HPMC line to a gelatin line, with another HPMC line expected to be converted soon.
API Business Progress and Milestones
The Q1 FY27 performance in the API business was described as mixed, facing headwinds due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, coupled with the appreciation of the Chinese yuan and the depreciation of the Indian rupee, which moderated volumes in the African export segment routed through merchant exporters.Despite these pressures, Natural Capsules Limited achieved significant operational and strategic progress in its API division. The first batch under a contract manufacturing agreement with Fermbox Bio commenced in August. Furthermore, a new contract manufacturing agreement was executed with a Mumbai-based client, expanding the company's CMO pipeline.
On the technical front, the company successfully completed gram scale batches of prednisolone during the quarter and expects its first fully backward integrated prednisolone batch by the end of September. A fermentation step has also been transitioned to an enzymatic route, resulting in improved yields and cost optimization for API operations.
Regulatory and Leadership Developments
From a regulatory perspective, the WHO GMP application process has been initiated, with the associated audit expected by the end of Q2 FY27. NCL has also strengthened its API business leadership by appointing a Chief Operating Officer, who brings over 30 years of industry experience, including previous work at Shilpa Medicare.Natural Capsules Limited is a pioneer in vegetarian capsule manufacturing in India and is one of the second largest Indian manufacturers for gelatin capsules. The company is expanding into API manufacturing through its subsidiary, Natural Biogenex Private Limited.
