Three Indian-origin engineers have been elevated to critical leadership roles as Elon Musk orchestrates a massive overhaul of the engineering team at xAI. These strategic changes come amid xAI's deeper integration with SpaceX, positioning the AI firm for a major initial public offering (IPO).

The restructuring signals an intense effort to accelerate development. According to reports citing an internal memo, the action is being taken because SpaceX reportedly felt the company was significantly behind its industry peers.

Key Roles Assigned to Indian-Origin AI Talent

The restructuring specifically appoints Indian-origin engineers to command core technical pillars of the AI lifecycle. Devendra Chaplot, who joined xAI last month, will spearhead pre-training efforts. He is responsible for the initial phase where AI models absorb general patterns from vast datasets encompassing text, images, and code.

Aman Madaan has been tapped to lead the model factory and tooling department. This role mandates oversight of the critical infrastructure, data pipelines, and training workflows necessary for developing advanced AI models.

Furthermore, Aditya Gupta will take charge of the crucial post-training and reinforcement learning stage. This final refinement phase aligns the AI model with human preferences, optimizing it for real-world applications such as sophisticated chatting or coding assistance.

Strategic Executive Appointments Boosting xAI's Capabilities

Elevating leadership extends beyond technical roles. Michael Nicholls, a senior vice president of Starlink at SpaceX, has been appointed as the new president of xAI.

This move formalizes the tight coupling between the two entities. SpaceX acquired xAI earlier this year and is actively planning its IPO. The rapid leadership realignment mirrors the urgency to keep pace with tech rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsburg have also seen their mandates expanded. Joining xAI in March after stints at Cursor, the duo will now lead the company's entire product team. Their domain includes the development overseeing Grok Main, Grok Voice, and Grok Imagine.

Reinforcing Infrastructure for IPO Readiness

Infrastructure and data handling have also seen significant reinforcements. Jake Palmer is assigned leadership of the physical infrastructure at xAI. Complementing this, Daniel Dueri, who serves as the director of software engineering at SpaceX, will oversee the compute infrastructure.

Matt Monson, the director of Starlink software at SpaceX, has been tapped to head data operations for xAI. The memo indicated that xAI's current compute training performance is "embarrassingly low." The company has committed to making significant improvements in this area over the next two months.

The changes are described as immediate, with management working to grant employees titles that more accurately reflect their expanded responsibilities. This robust overhaul follows previous organizational shifts, including the departure of several cofounders, as xAI races to cement its position in the competitive AI landscape.
