Meta Poised to Slashing Thousands of Jobs as AI Reshapes Global Tech Landscape

New Delhi, April 18 US tech giant Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly preparing for significant workforce reductions. Sources suggest the company may plan to lay off at least 10 per cent of its global staff next month.

These planned cuts could affect nearly 8,000 workers, marking a substantial reduction in the company's operational size. Furthermore, the raw data indicates that additional rounds of layoffs are anticipated later in the year, although specifics remain unconfirmed.

Scale of Potential Reductions at Meta

The initial round of cuts expected in May is projected to target approximately 10 per cent of Meta's total global workforce. However, the layoff plans are heavily linked to the development trajectory of the company's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

The severity of the reductions could escalate significantly, according to available reports. Meta is reportedly planning to reduce its total workforce by 20 per cent or more. If this higher level were implemented, the job cuts could impact roughly 16,000 employees, based on Meta's workforce of nearly 79,000 people as of December 31.

The Mark Zuckerberg-led company has not officially confirmed any of the layoff plans, and as of the writing, it has not issued an immediate comment on the reports circulating.

Broader Tech Sector Correction Driven by AI

Meta’s potential downsizing is part of a broader, accelerating trend of tech layoffs observed globally. Recent reports indicate that more than 80,000 jobs were already cut in the first quarter of 2026.

These overall job losses are projected to exceed 3 lakh in 2026, led by major players including Oracle, Amazon, and Meta. A report from TradingPlatforms highlights that this current wave builds upon a wider post-pandemic correction.

Since 2021, the global tech sector has seen the loss of over one million tech jobs as companies adjust their hiring strategies following the rapid expansion witnessed during the Covid-era.

Artificial Intelligence Fuels Global Corporate Restructuring

The shift in the tech industry is fundamentally being driven by automation and advancements in artificial intelligence. These factors are redefining corporate structures and necessitating deep-seated restructuring.

Indeed, AI has emerged as a key catalyst for this transformation across the industry. Nearly half of all layoffs recorded in 2026 have been explicitly linked to AI-related restructuring efforts across various corporations.

The United States remains the most impacted market in this downturn. The US has accounted for nearly 77 per cent of global layoffs so far this year, reporting over 61,000 job cuts across 62 different companies.

Corporate Titans Lead Global Workforce Streamlining

Leading the charges of cost-optimization are several industry giants. Oracle, for instance, has reported the highest number of global layoffs in 2026. The company cut more than 25,000 roles as part of a major restructuring initiative tied directly to its AI infrastructure push.

Amazon has followed with notable job cuts. The tech giant shed around 16,000 jobs amid intense efforts to improve efficiency and streamline its global operations.
