
Project to Generate 1.7 Lakh Carbon Credits Over 10 Years
New Delhi, February 25: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Wednesday announced that its in plant railway siding in Gujarat has been registered as the world’s first modal shift transportation project under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard initiative.The project is expected to generate approximately 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a 10 year crediting period, spanning FY 2023-24 to FY 2032-33, by shifting vehicle dispatches from road transport to railways.
Following independent verification of carbon emission savings, Verra will issue 1.7 lakh carbon credits to the company under its Verified Carbon Standard program.
What Is Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard Program
Verra is a global non profit organisation that develops and manages standards for climate action and sustainable development. It administers the Verified Carbon Standard program, widely regarded as the world’s leading voluntary greenhouse gas crediting framework.Through the VCS program, Verra has issued over 1 billion carbon credits, representing more than 1 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or removed. This makes it one of the largest and most established platforms in the voluntary carbon market.
The program aims to ensure high integrity carbon credits while supporting credible climate action by governments and businesses globally.
Shift From Road to Rail Cuts Logistics Emissions
The Gujarat in plant railway siding project focuses on transitioning vehicle movement from road to rail transport. According to the company, this modal shift has helped significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its logistics operations.Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said that by moving vehicle dispatches to rail, the project demonstrates how operational scale, efficiency, and environmental responsibility can work together. He added that leveraging the inherent efficiency of rail transport has also eased road congestion and lowered overall fossil fuel consumption.
Over Six Lakh Vehicles Dispatched Since March 2023
Maruti Suzuki India has dispatched more than six lakh vehicles cumulatively from the Gujarat railway siding since operations began in March 2023.The company stated that this milestone marks a significant step in its sustainability journey and reinforces its commitment to aligning with India’s progress towards net zero emissions.
With the registration under Verra’s VCS framework, the Gujarat rail siding initiative positions Maruti Suzuki at the forefront of low carbon automotive logistics and voluntary carbon credit generation.
