Market Plummets as FIIs Offload Shares Worth ₹819 Crore Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Oil Price Surge

The Indian equity markets faced a challenging session, extending their fall for the third consecutive day. The downturn was heavily influenced by rising global oil prices and persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While foreign institutional investors (FIIs) recorded a net outflow of ₹819.20 crore on Wednesday, domestic institutions provided some counterbalancing support to the broader market.

The Nifty 50 index closed at 23,996, marking a decline of 191 points or 0.79 percent. Similarly, the BSE Sensex ended at 76,755, shedding 715 points (0.92 percent). Broader indices were also under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap 100 indices falling 1.09 percent and 1.54 percent, respectively.

Market Performance Driven by Geopolitical Uncertainty

The market's downward trajectory was directly attributed to heightened concerns regarding potential oil supply disruptions. The ongoing US-Iran standoff combined with Houthi-led disruptions to crucial global shipping routes drove crude prices higher, consequently weakening the rupee.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, highlighted that these factors are fueling the volatility across energy and commodity markets. This instability led to a sharp rise in India VIX, which jumped 5.5 percent to reach 13.29. While this signals some investor discomfort, it has not been classified as a major market risk yet.

FIIs and DII Activity Reaches Neutral Balance on Wednesday

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers in Indian equities for the day, offloading shares valued at ₹819.20 crore. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also recorded a net outflow of ₹418.26 crore, despite significant buying activity during the session.

Examining the daily trading flows, FIIs bought shares worth ₹12,889.82 crore but sold equities amounting to ₹13,709.02 crore. DIIs purchased shares totaling ₹13,665.69 crore but sold shares valued at ₹14,083.95 crore.

Institutional Trends: FII Selling Persists While DIIs Act as Buyers

When reviewing the weekly flows, foreign investors registered a net selling activity in two out of three sessions, offloading a total of ₹290 crore worth of shares this week. Conversely, domestic institutional investors managed to be net buyers, accumulating ₹237 crore during the period.

Over the course of July, FIIs remain net sellers for the month, having withdrawn approximately ₹4,837 crore from Indian equities. This figure represents a significant improvement compared to June, when overseas investors pulled out around ₹49,000 crore.

Year-to-Date Trends and Sectoral Performance Analysis

On a year-to-date basis, FIIs are net sellers, having withdrawn nearly ₹3.5 lakh crore from Indian equities. However, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have demonstrated strong commitment, investing almost ₹4.91 lakh crore, thereby offsetting a substantial portion of the foreign outflow and supporting domestic market stability.

Sectoral performance saw widespread pressure across several segments. Bank, IT, Pharma, Realty, Healthcare, and Cement all declined between 1 percent and 2.6 percent. In contrast, FMCG and auto stocks were buoyed by strong quarterly earnings from leading sector companies.

Near-Term Outlook: Stock Action Will Dominate Amid Volatility

Analysts suggest that the market is likely to trade sideways in the near term, carrying a marginal negative bias due to sustained geopolitical instability in West Asia. Brent crude prices have risen toward their five-week high of around $95 a barrel, sustaining caution among investors.

Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, indicated that stock-specific action is expected to take precedence as the earnings season progresses through the coming weeks.
