Juniper Green Energy IPO Matures on Day 2: Is Institutional Confidence Enough to Sustain Listing Gains?

The Rs 1,800 crore Juniper Green Energy IPO witnessed a muted response on the second day of bidding on Friday. The issue was subscribed 44% by 12:15 pm, indicating a mixed sentiment among retail and non-institutional investors (NIIs). This pre-market performance has drawn attention to the significance of institutional demand in driving early momentum for the renewable energy IPP.

The IPO currently offers 8 crore equity shares, all through a fresh issue with no offer-for-sale component. The company has set the price band between Rs 214 and Rs 225 per share, allowing retail investors a minimum investment of Rs 14,850 at the upper band.

Subscription Status and Grey Market Sentiment

Early momentum is heavily concentrated in the Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB) segment, which is currently subscribed 1.19 times its offer. This reflects strong confidence from major financial institutions in the company's long-term prospects.

Conversely, retail participation remains subdued, with Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) subscribing at only 18% against the 2.94 crore shares reserved for them. Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) showed even less enthusiasm so far, with a subscription rate of 7%.

The Grey Market Premium (GMP) has softened in recent trading sessions. The GMP is currently reported at Rs 8 per share, translating to an estimated premium of about 2.67% over the upper price band. This suggests that expectations for listing-day gains are more tempered than initially anticipated by some market observers.

Financial Strategy and Debt Reduction Focus

Juniper Green Energy intends to utilize a substantial portion of the IPO proceeds towards strengthening its financial foundation. The company plans to deploy approximately Rs 1,411.92 crore specifically for debt reduction across different areas.

Of this total commitment, Rs 683.24 crore will be used for the repayment or prepayment of certain borrowings held by Juniper Green Energy itself. Furthermore, Rs 728.69 crore is earmarked to assist material subsidiaries in repaying their outstanding loans.

The remaining funds from the issue will be allocated towards general corporate purposes. This aggressive focus on debt reduction is a strategic move expected to lower finance costs and improve the company's overall financial health moving forward.

Juniper Green Energy’s Market Position and Strengths

Founded in 2011, Juniper Green Energy Limited stands as one of India's leading independent power producers (IPPs). The company actively develops, builds, operates, and maintains large-scale renewable energy projects across solar, wind, hybrid, and Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) segments.

The company boasts a diversified portfolio totaling 7,910.20 MW (10,247.06 MWp), encompassing operational, under-construction, contracted, and awarded projects. This places it among the top 10 renewable IPPs in India by installed and pipeline capacity as of June 30, 2026.

A key element of its competitive advantage is an integrated business model. Juniper possesses in-house capabilities across Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M). This integration ensures efficient project execution and improved operational efficiency for the company.

Expert Viewpoints on IPO Valuation

Brokerage Swastika Research has assigned a Neutral rating to the IPO, viewing it as an opportunity primarily suited for long-term investors. The brokerage notes that the company possesses strong growth potential, underpinned by its robust 7.9 GW renewable energy project pipeline and stable revenue visibility secured through long-term 25-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with government-backed entities.

However, Swastika Research highlighted concerns regarding valuation. They pointed out that the IPO is priced at a steep multiple of more than 270 times its FY26 trailing earnings, even given the company's relatively modest profitability levels.

The brokerage advised potential investors to factor in execution challenges, regulatory uncertainties, and inherent leverage risks within the renewable energy sector before investing. They concluded that long-term commitment is necessary to capitalize on India's broader renewable energy transition story.
