
Jio Set to Launch India's First Homegrown Satellite Constellation After Technical Nod for 1,600 LEO Satellites
Reliance Jio has received a critical technical green light for its ambitious plan to deploy approximately 1,600 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Authorities have validated the proposal as technically sound and comparable to global benchmarks like SpaceX's Starlink.The evaluation was conducted by a high-level panel including the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the Wireless Planning and Coordination wing of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
This technical clearance is expected to facilitate government support for the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate as it seeks international orbital slots. Jio has requested government assistance with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) filings and coordination with other global satellite operators.
Strategic Significance for National Security and Defense
The emergence of a homegrown LEO constellation is viewed as a vital move for India's national security and strategic defense requirements. Currently, the LEO segment is dominated by Elon Musk-owned Starlink, which operates over 10,000 satellites.Geopolitical tensions are increasingly pushing nations to minimize reliance on overseas satellite providers. The space regulator reportedly emphasized these strategic benefits in its comments to the government during the evaluation process.
IN-SPACe has expressed that regulatory and policy support should be extended to help India establish its first homegrown non-geostationary (NGSO) constellation. Discussions have also occurred at the highest levels regarding hosting defense payloads on some of these satellites.
Superior Capacity and Technical Architecture
The planned capacity for Jio's constellation is reportedly the highest ever proposed for India. The company has proposed to offer 4.5 to 5 tera bit per second (Tbps) throughput over the country.In comparison, Starlink currently has approval for 600 Gigabit per second (Gbps), while Amazon Leo plans to offer 3 Tbps capacity but has yet to secure authorization from IN-SPACe.
The proposed orbital parameters and architecture are designed to allow coexistence with other Indian constellations in the future. This ensures that the infrastructure can scale without creating orbital interference within the domestic space ecosystem.
Comprehensive Service Offerings and Infrastructure
Reliance Jio intends to offer a wide range of services including fixed satellite services, broadband, and cellular backhaul. The company also aims to provide mobile satellite services such as direct-to-device connectivity.To support this massive constellation, Jio plans to establish between 20 and 22 ground stations across the country. This infrastructure will be essential for providing seamless connectivity and managing the data flow from the LEO satellites.
