Jatinder Mehra, Vice Chairman of Essar Group’s Metals & Mining Division, Passes Away at 86​

New Delhi, February 25: Jatinder Mehra, a towering figure in India’s steel and metals industry with a career spanning more than six decades, passed away on February 24 at the age of 86.

Mehra was serving as the Vice Chairman of the Metals & Mining Division at Essar Group, where he played a strategic role in steering the conglomerate’s metals and mining operations. Known for his deep technical knowledge and operational leadership, he was instrumental in shaping several large-scale industrial projects.

Essar Group Pays Tribute to Industry Veteran​

In a message shared on X, Essar Group expressed deep sorrow over his demise, describing him as a respected veteran of India’s steel industry.

“The Essar Group is deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jatinder Mehra, a respected veteran of India's steel industry and a leader whose vision guided some of our most significant milestones at Essar Group,” the group stated.

The company noted that Mehra led numerous transformational projects, converting ideas into impactful outcomes while inspiring teams with clarity, commitment, and leadership. His contributions, the group said, remain embedded in Essar’s journey and will continue to guide its future direction.

Key Role in Expanding Steel Capacity at Hazira and Paradip​

During his tenure at Essar, Mehra played a pivotal role in expanding steelmaking capacity at Hazira and advancing integrated steel initiatives, including the proposed Paradip steel facility in Odisha. His leadership helped strengthen the group’s footprint in the global steel sector.

His efforts in scaling operations and executing integrated steel projects contributed significantly to Essar’s position in the metals and mining space.

Leadership Roles at SAIL and RINL​

Before joining Essar, Mehra held several senior leadership roles in India’s public sector steel industry. He served as Executive Director at Steel Authority of India Ltd and later as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited.

Across both public and private sector assignments, Mehra’s career reflected sustained engagement with large industrial projects and strategic expansion in the steel and metals domain.

With his passing, India’s steel industry bids farewell to a veteran whose legacy spans critical phases of growth and capacity creation in the sector.
