IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns; Rahul Bhatia Takes Interim Charge

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, are expected to remain in focus on Wednesday, March 11, after the airline announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers.

Rahul Bhatia to Manage Operations on Interim Basis

In a regulatory filing, IndiGo stated that its Board of Directors took note of Elbers’ resignation during a meeting held on March 10, 2026. The airline confirmed that Elbers would step down from his position at the close of business hours on the same day.

Following his departure, Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will temporarily oversee the management of the airline’s affairs until further arrangements are made.

According to the company’s filing, Bhatia will assume interim responsibility for the overall functioning of the airline.

Resignation Follows Major Operational Disruption

Elbers’ resignation comes nearly three months after IndiGo faced a significant operational disruption in December that affected hundreds of flights and left at least three lakh passengers stranded. The incident was widely considered one of the airline’s most severe operational crises in recent years.

After the disruption, the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation imposed penalties totaling ₹22.20 crore on IndiGo and directed the airline to undertake corrective measures.

The episode also triggered scrutiny from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the regulator, prompting IndiGo to initiate an internal review aimed at strengthening the resilience and reliability of its operational processes.

Elbers Cites Personal Reasons for Stepping Down

In his resignation letter addressed to Rahul Bhatia, Elbers stated that he was stepping down due to personal reasons and requested that his notice period be waived.

He described his tenure at the airline as a meaningful experience and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to lead the company.

Elbers had taken over as IndiGo’s Chief Executive Officer in September 2022 and led the airline during a period of continued growth and operational expansion.

InterGlobe Aviation Shares Gain

On Tuesday, shares of InterGlobe Aviation closed 3.46 percent higher at ₹4,383.50.

Despite the recent gain, the stock remains down by more than 14 percent so far in 2026.
