IndiGo Discontinues Wide-Body Operations, Concludes Damp Lease with Norse Atlantic Airways

National, 31 July 2026: InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) has announced that it will discontinue its wide-body operations in response to a challenging operating environment caused by ongoing geopolitical tensions and rising costs. The airline confirmed the conclusion of its damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways, effective October 31, 2026.
Effective October 25, 2026, IndiGo will transition services between Mumbai and Amsterdam, previously covered by the wide-body operations, to be operated using its Airbus A321XLR fleet. Furthermore, the airline will temporarily suspend services to and from London Heathrow until such time as their A350-900 aircraft are delivered.
The decision followed a comprehensive review prompted by significant escalations in operational costs, including airspace constraints, elevated fuel costs, and currency pressures, which have affected route efficiency and overall competitiveness in the aviation market.
Review of Long-Haul Strategy
IndiGo had initiated the program by entering into a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for six Boeing 787-9 aircraft in early 2025. The initiative was intended to accelerate long-haul learning, build operational capabilities, and establish brand presence ahead of its planned Airbus A350 operations.During this period, the airline gained critical competencies spanning longhaul network planning, customer experience management, crew operations, maintenance, airport handling, revenue management, and international partnerships.
Abhijit Dasgupta, SVP of Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, stated that the project was focused not just on specific routes but on laying the foundation for future long-haul expansion. He confirmed that the airline remains committed to expanding its global footprint and will continue strengthening its European network through services utilizing the Airbus A321XLR while preparing for its own widebody services in line with long-term international ambitions.
IndiGo confirmed it will work closely with affected customers to provide suitable alternatives, including refunds and alternate travel arrangements, ensuring a smooth transition period.
