India's Global Trade Push Accelerates: Government Confirms US Deal Status Amid Robust Export Growth

Status of India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement Update

The government has confirmed that negotiations for the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) are ongoing. This update was provided by the Commerce Ministry to the Lok Sabha on August 11, nearly six months after both nations announced a framework for an interim trade agreement.

The Ministry listed the India-US BTA as one of the critical FTAs currently under negotiation. It stated that while the two countries had agreed on a framework back on February 7, 2026, the negotiations remain active. This disclosure highlights the dynamic state of India's international commerce strategy.

Broadening Trade Horizons: Key FTAs Under Negotiation

Beyond the US deal, the government outlined an extensive pipeline of ongoing trade talks. India is actively negotiating FTAs with several key partners, including Chile, Canada, Israel, Peru, and the Maldives, among others.

Furthermore, while negotiations concluded successfully with the European Union, the signing of the India-New Zealand FTA is underway for ratification. These agreements underscore India's continuous effort to deepen economic ties globally.

FTAs Drive Merchandise Export Growth

Existing trade pacts are making a significant impact on India’s export profile. The Ministry reported that merchandise exports directed towards major FTA partner countries and trade blocs reached $179.1 billion in 2025-26. This figure accounts for 40.5 percent of the country's total merchandise exports.

Overall, Indian exports demonstrated resilience, increasing from $677 billion in 2021-22 to $863 billion in 2025-26. The Ministry noted this robust growth despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply-chain disruptions.

Govt Bolsters MSME Sector Through Dedicated Programs

Addressing the importance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the government detailed measures aimed at maximizing tariff concessions available under FTAs. These steps are designed to boost their participation in international markets.

The trade agreements now feature specific outreach programs tailored for different sectors. These initiatives cover crucial areas like market access, rules of origin, certification procedures, and compliance requirements.

Export Promotion Mission Boosts MSME Competitiveness

To provide sustained support, the government highlighted the Rs 25,060-crore Export Promotion Mission. This mission is scheduled to run from 2025-26 through 2030-31.

The program intends to strengthen export competitiveness by offering comprehensive support. Assistance areas include trade finance, credit guarantees, branding, logistics management, market access assistance, and trade intelligence gathering.

Digital Trade Provisions Become Standard in New FTAs

A growing focus on the digital economy is also evident in India's newer trade agreements. The government stated that dedicated digital-trade chapters have been incorporated into the FTAs with the UAE, the UK, and the EU.

Domestically, the framework for data protection is solidified by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and its DPDP Rules, 2025. These laws provide a necessary structure for personal-data protection and cross-border data transfers.
