Indian Equities Brace for Turbulence as Global Uncertainty Sends Brent Crude Above $100
The broader equity market showed resilience amid heightened global uncertainty, outperforming benchmark indices despite significant losses recorded in major indices. The market saw mixed Q1 earnings reports from India Inc., buffering some of the pressure created by escalating geopolitical tensions and surging crude oil prices. This divergence highlights the strength of stock-specific buying amidst sector-wide weakness.Benchmark Index Performance Amid Global Turmoil
The BSE Sensex closed at 76,059.77, declining by 2,091.68 points, or 2.67 percent. The Nifty 50 also shed significantly, finishing at 23,767.45 after a drop of 566.85 points, which translates to 2.32 percent. These declines came as global instability intensified following the escalation in the Middle East, pushing Brent crude prices beyond $100 per barrel.Angel One's Osho Krishan noted that these movements collectively dampened investor sentiment, leading to a broad-based selling pressure. The benchmark indices declined decisively below all their key EMAs after a brief consolidation phase.
Broader Market Resilience: Midcap and Smallcap Trends
While the major indices struggled, the broader market segments showed distinct performance. The Nifty Midcap 100 index saw losses of 1.2 percent for the week. Key stocks dragged down this segment included Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Oracle Financial Services Software, Swiggy, and SRF.The Nifty Smallcap 100 index fell by 2 percent during the trading week. Notable gainers in the small-cap space included Data Patterns (India), Karur Vysya Bank, and Himadri Speciality Chemical, which rose between 6-12 percent.
Sectoral Shifts and Defensive Strengths
Sector performance across the market remained largely negative, with specific sectors showing sharp declines. The Nifty Private Bank index emerged as the biggest laggard, declining 4.32% due to profit booking in heavyweight lenders. The Nifty Realty index was down 4.02%.In contrast, defensive sectors exhibited resilience and outperformed the wider market. The Nifty FMCG index led the positive movements, rising 0.62%. This was followed by a gain of 0.44% for the Nifty Auto index, while the Nifty Media index advanced by 0.39%.
Institutional Flows and Market Cap Movement
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) extended their selling streak during the second consecutive week, offloading equities worth ₹7,182.08 crore. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, countered this trend by investing a significant sum of ₹8,637.58 crore.Despite these contrasting flows, the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies experienced a decline of nearly ₹5 lakh crore during the week.
Expert Outlook and Technical Advisory
Several analysts maintained a cautious stance regarding the near-term trajectory of the indices. Religare Broking’s Ajit Mishra noted that technically, Nifty slipped below its prevailing consolidation range of 23,800–24,400 before rebounding slightly. A decisive breach of the trendline support around 23,600 could potentially trigger a decline toward the 23,100 zone.Choice Equity Broking’s Sachin Gupta advised that the region between 24,000 and 24,150 is set to act as immediate resistance on any rebound. Centrum Finverse highlighted that momentum indicators show a cautious bias, with the MACD observing a bearish crossover. Nilesh Jain suggested a buy-on-dips approach only near strong support levels until sustained market strength returns.
Path Forward: Key Support and Resistance Levels
Technical analysis suggests crucial battlegrounds for near-term trading. Angel One’s Osho Krishan identified 23,650–23,600 as the intermediate support zone, with a secondary support expected in the 23,400–23,350 zone. The confluence of 20 and 50 DEMA in the 23,950–24,000 region is considered a sturdy hurdle requiring decisive breakthrough to reinstate momentum.Centrum Finverse indicated that the 50-DMA and 100-DMA convergence around the 23,850 zone will act as immediate and strong resistance. Overall, market direction remains highly sensitive to crude oil prices, geopolitical developments in the Middle East, and global market trends.
