New Delhi, February 25: With a clear policy roadmap and robust industry participation, India is poised to establish itself as a leading global hub for electric mobility manufacturing and innovation, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Wednesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the third FICCI National Conference on Electric Vehicles, the minister underlined the government’s commitment to accelerating electric vehicle adoption across the country.
Electric Mobility Central to Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision
Kumaraswamy stated that the government will explore every possible measure to encourage electric mobility adoption.“As we move towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, electric mobility must remain central to the Make in India agenda, strengthening domestic manufacturing, deepening localization, and positioning India as a global production hub for EVs, batteries, and critical components,” he said.
The minister emphasized that policy clarity and industry collaboration are essential to transforming India into a global electric vehicle manufacturing powerhouse.
Automotive Exports Nearly Double in a Decade
Highlighting India’s growing strength in manufacturing, Kumaraswamy noted that automotive component exports have nearly doubled over the past decade, increasing from around 8 billion dollars to 16.9 billion dollars.“This growth reflects India’s deepening integration into global value chains and its growing credibility as a manufacturing hub,” he said at the conference.
The surge in exports signals India’s expanding footprint in the global automotive ecosystem, strengthening its case as a competitive and reliable production destination.
Global EV Market Offers Trillion-Dollar Opportunity
Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, addressing the gathering, pointed out that the global electric vehicles market is projected to reach trillions of dollars over the next decade. He said supply chains are undergoing realignment, with countries rethinking trade localization and strategic dependencies.
“India must position itself as a trusted manufacturing hub for electric vehicles,” he said.
Kant added that electric mobility is not just a climate necessity but also a significant economic, industrial, technological, and strategic opportunity. He described the EV transition as a central pillar of the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
India Builds a Comprehensive Green Mobility Ecosystem
FICCI Green Mobility Committee Co-Chair Vikram Handa said India has moved from Green Mobility 1.0 to Green Mobility 2.0, building a comprehensive value chain. He noted that the ecosystem now spans processing of critical minerals, cell manufacturing, battery pack assembly, and production of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, buses, trucks, and charging infrastructure.
According to Handa, this integrated ecosystem reflects the direction of Indian industry and signals strong long-term potential for electric mobility manufacturing in the country.
With policy support, expanding exports, and a broadening industrial base, India is intensifying its push to become a global leader in electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, and clean mobility solutions.
