Before the ceremony, Prime Minister Rob Jetten held an introductory meeting with King Willem-Alexander, marking the formal transition to the new administration.
Coalition Structure and Political Landscape
The new cabinet is a coalition of Democrats 66, People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, and Christian Democratic Appeal, formed on January 30.A total of 27 parties contested the parliamentary elections last October, with 15 securing representation in the House of Representatives. Democrats 66 and the Party for Freedom each won 26 seats, followed by the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy with 22 seats and the GreenLeft–Labour alliance with 20 seats. The Christian Democratic Appeal secured 18 seats, while JA21 won nine.
On January 9, Democrats 66, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, and the Christian Democratic Appeal announced their plan to form a minority cabinet. Together, the three parties hold 66 seats in the 150-member House of Representatives, falling 10 seats short of a majority and 16 seats short in the Senate.
In their coalition agreement, the parties acknowledged that minority cabinets are rare in Dutch politics and described the situation as uncharted territory. They emphasized that the success of the government would depend on collaboration with both chambers of Parliament, other government bodies, and civil society organisations.
Policy Priorities of the New Administration
According to the coalition agreement, the new government will prioritise improving public administration efficiency, accelerating housing construction and energy transition, advancing proactive climate policies, and promoting high-tech industries to stimulate economic growth.Other focus areas include tightening immigration policies, reforming social security and healthcare systems, and strengthening national security and international cooperation.
With a new government in place in the Netherlands and strong political engagement at the highest levels, India–Netherlands relations are positioned for further consolidation across trade, technology, sustainability, and strategic cooperation.
