India EV Sales Surge Past 3 Lakh Units: Two-Wheelers and Commercial Vehicles Drive Electric Adoption Milestone
India's electric vehicle (EV) retail market achieved a historic milestone in June, with sales touching 3,06,220 units. This monumental jump reflects rapid electrification across multiple segments, marking the first time that overall EV penetration crossed the critical 12 percent threshold. The strong performance came despite challenges like a delayed monsoon and generally weak seasonal demand. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) confirmed these record sales figures.
C S Vigneshwar, FADA President, described June as a defining month for India's EV transition. He noted that the industry retailed 3,06,220 electric vehicles, which is nearly 63 percent higher compared to the previous year. This data signifies deep-seated market maturity and accelerating adoption rates in the country.
Electric Two-Wheelers Lead Massive Growth Rally
The two-wheeler segment continues to be the primary engine of growth for EVs. Retail sales of electric two-wheelers soared by 75 percent year-on-year, reaching 1,93,735 units in June. This represents a significant step up from May, where the sector registered 1,80,827 units (implying an increase over May).TVS Motor maintained market leadership within this segment, recording sales of 47,064 units. Bajaj Auto followed closely with 43,306 units sold, while Ather Energy secured 31,230 registrations. Ola Electric managed 16,150 units, despite a sequential decline of nearly 22 percent year-on-year.
Passenger and Commercial EVs Hit Record Highs
The electric passenger vehicle (PV) segment also posted spectacular results. Retail sales for electric PVs more than doubled compared to one year ago, reaching 31,823 units in June. This indicates a healthy consumer shift toward zero-emission personal transport.Tata Motors continues its strong performance in the PV category, leading with 12,187 units sold. Mahindra & Mahindra registered 7,766 electric cars, closely followed by JSW MG Motor India with 5,861 units. Maruti Suzuki and VinFast also contributed significantly to this segment's record performance.
Electric commercial vehicles (CVs) witnessed perhaps the most explosive growth across all segments. Sales surged by an astonishing 163.7 percent year-on-year. Total CV sales stood at 3,214 units, which is a sequential rise of 33.9 percent from May. Tata Motors anchored this segment with 1,114 electric commercial vehicle registrations.
Three-Wheelers Prove Most Electrified Segment
Electric three-wheelers remain the most mature and electrified category within the Indian market. Sales in this critical utility sector climbed by 27.4 percent year-on-year to reach 77,448 units in June. EV penetration in the three-wheeler segment stands at a commanding 64.1 percent.Mahindra Group led the electric three-wheeler segment with 12,838 units sold. Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor were among other notable participants pushing this growth trajectory forward. FADA highlighted that these figures reflect broad adoption across vehicle categories rather than reliance on any single market niche.
Vigneshwar concluded by emphasizing that electrification has definitively moved from a marginal interest to the mainstream of Indian auto retail. He added that legacy manufacturers are now strongly leading the electric two-wheeler space, while global and local entrants are prioritizing India as a key market.
