ICICI Lombard Reassures Drivers: E20 Fuel Use Will Not Lead to Motor Insurance Claim Rejection

ICICI Lombard General Insurance has definitively clarified that the use of E-20 fuel, a blend containing 20 percent ethanol, will not invalidate motor insurance policies. The insurer reaffirmed on June 15, 2026, that claims will not be rejected merely because a vehicle is operating on the increasingly standard ethanol-blended fuel.

This clarification comes after previous guidance from an ICICI Lombard blog post had generated confusion among consumers regarding potential claim admissibility in older or incompatible vehicles. The insurance company has now removed all ambiguity surrounding this matter.

Clarifying Concerns Over E20 Fuel and Claim Admissibility

The insurer addressed concerns that arose after a blog post published on June 9, 2026 (and subsequently edited on June 14, 2026). The initial blog had suggested that while damage from E20 fuel might be covered, insurers could examine such claims through the lens of improper use or negligence, potentially leading to rejection.

ICICI Lombard emphatically stated that it does not consider the use of E-20 fuel in older vehicles as an act of negligence. Furthermore, the company highlighted that it views the E-20 fuel program as a progressive and environment-friendly step forward for mobility across India.

Defining the Scope of Motor Insurance Coverage

The insurer stressed that motor insurance policies are fundamentally designed to cover accidental damages, theft, personal accident liabilities (for owner-drivers and co-passengers), and third-party liabilities, depending on the coverage selected by the insured individual.

ICICI Lombard explained that claims assessment is entirely based on insured events such as accidents or outright theft. The type of fuel used in the vehicle is explicitly stated not to be a determining factor in claim admissibility.

Fuel Type Does Not Affect Claim Admissibility

In a clear statement issued today, ICICI Lombard reiterated that if a claim is admissible when conventional fuel is used, it is equally admissible when E-20 fuel is utilized. The company confirmed it does not reject claims simply on the basis of fuel usage.

The insurance provider stated that "Claims are admissible based on the occurrence of insured perils such as vehicle accidents or theft." This assurance aims to stabilize the market and protect drivers utilizing sustainable fuel alternatives.

E20 Fuel Blends Standard in Sustainable Mobility

E20 petrol, which is a blend consisting of 80 percent petrol and 20 percent ethanol, is gaining traction as a standard fuel throughout India. This shift reflects the government’s continuous push toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions nationwide.

The insurer noted that vehicles manufactured after April 2023 under BS6 Phase 2 emission norms are specifically designed to operate on E20 fuel without significant issues, ensuring proper functionality across compliant models.
