Hindustan Zinc and TERI partner to launch world's largest industrial ecological restoration project

Hindustan Zinc Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to undertake a massive 250-hectare ecological restoration project at its Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex in Rajasthan. This ambitious initiative aims to transform the company's industrial landscape into a self-sustaining natural ecosystem, potentially establishing one of the world's largest green cover areas within an industrial premise.

The collaboration is central to Hindustan Zinc's commitment to Sustainability Goal 2030, focusing on halting and reversing biodiversity loss and progressively working towards Net Positive Impact (NPI). The restoration project will employ a scientific, multi-layered approach, including the planting of native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses suited to the local landscape. Key elements of the plan also involve measures for invasive species management and support for water bodies and aquatic ecosystems. TERI will provide expertise in identifying suitable native and adaptive plant species throughout the planning, design, and implementation phases.

The new project builds upon Hindustan Zinc's existing work with TERI at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex. At the Jarofix Yard, which manages residue from the zinc smelting process, restoration activities covering 22.25 hectares have already been completed across two phases. Additionally, a separate 6-hectare biodiversity park is currently being developed on a secured landfill within the complex. Utilizing TERI's Mycorrhiza technology, nearly 56,400 native trees have been planted, successfully creating dense green cover despite challenging industrial conditions.

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, stated that sustainability is paramount to the company’s operations. He highlighted that the partnership with TERI reflects a commitment to transforming industrial land into resilient green ecosystems supporting native biodiversity and ecological restoration. As the first Indian company to join ICMM, HZL aims to align with global standards in sustainable mining and create lasting value for the environment, communities, and the nation.

The 250-hectare initiative is part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader ESG roadmap, which emphasizes land restoration, biodiversity conservation, water stewardship, and decarbonization. The company has made significant advancements across several operational areas. It currently has a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement underway, expected to supply over 70% of its power requirement. Furthermore, HZL has improved its water recycling rate to 49% and expanded its green mobility fleet, which now includes electric and LNG powered vehicles, totaling 232 vehicles.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta group company, has consistently demonstrated leadership in sustainable practices. The company was ranked as the world's most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. Hindustan Zinc is also recognized as a certified 3.32 times Water-Positive company and remains committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
