Hindustan Construction Company Secures ~524 Crore Contract from NHPC for Salal Power Station in Jammu & Kashmir

Mumbai: Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) has secured a contract valued at approximately 524.17 crore from NHPC Limited. The project focuses on the rehabilitation and operationalization of the undersluices of the concrete dam at the Salal Power Station, located in Jammu & Kashmir.
The contract involves undertaking civil and hydro-mechanical works, along with associated ancillary and enabling tasks necessary to make the dam's undersluices fully functional and operational. The duration allotted for this critical project is 27 months. The rehabilitation of the Salal Power Station, a key hydroelectric asset for NHPC, is expected to improve the dam's long-term safety and reliability while enhancing its operational efficiency and sediment management capabilities.
This contract builds upon HCC’s extensive history in delivering landmark engineering projects across Jammu & Kashmir. HCC was instrumental in the construction of the 690 MW Salal Hydroelectric Project, which was commissioned in 1987. The company has also completed several other major power generation projects in the region.
The key hydroelectric infrastructure projects executed by HCC in J&K include:
| Project Name | Capacity (MW) |
|---|---|
| Uri-II | 240 MW |
| Kishanganga | 333 MW |
| Nimoo Bazgo | 45 MW |
| Chutak | 44 MW |
Collectively, these projects represent a combined installed capacity of 1,352 MW, which accounts for approximately 38% of Jammu & Kashmir's total installed hydropower capacity. Beyond hydroelectric power infrastructure, HCC strengthened regional connectivity by building India's first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad and executing nearly 32 km of tunnels. This tunnel segment represents about 27% of the total tunnel length for the strategically important Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project, aiding both civilian and defense movement.
HCC operates as a business group dedicated to developing and building responsible infrastructure through advanced practices. With an engineering heritage spanning nearly 100 years, HCC has played a substantial role in major Indian projects. The company has constructed 26% of India's Hydro Power generation capacity and 60% of its Nuclear Power generation capacity. Furthermore, HCC’s achievements include constructing over 4,036 lane km of Expressways and Highways, more than 402 km of complex Tunnelling, and 403 Bridges. Today, HCC services the transportation, power, and water infrastructure sectors.
