High Demand Fuels Bond Market: RBI Releases SGS Auction Results Amid Steady Yields

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the full results for the State Government Securities (SGS) auction held on July 21, 2026. The auction saw robust participation across various state-issued bonds, reflecting sustained investor interest in supporting state fiscal health. The outcomes provide critical insights into the yield trends and demand dynamics within the government security market.

Competitive Bids Performance Across State Securities

The competitive bidding segment showed varied levels of absorption depending on the specific state and tenor. For instance, the allotment rate for Chhattisgarh SGS 2040 was noted at 19 out of 83 competitive bids, with a partial allocation percentage standing at 25.2744%.

In the West Bengal securities basket, total competitive bids amounted to 1279 across two issues, while the corresponding total allotted amount reached ₹20286.012 crore. Conversely, for the tenure-specific bonds in Delhi and Tamil Nadu, partial allotment rates remained stable, with Delhi SGS 2041 seeing a 90.1260% partial allotment percentage.

Non-Competitive Bids Show Strong Acceptance Rates

Non-competitive bidding consistently exhibited high conversion rates across most segments of the auction. For instance, in the case of Tamilnadu SGS 2034 (a re-issue), all non-competitive bids received were successfully allotted, showing a total allotment amount of ₹31.924 crore out of a notified amount of ₹1000 crore.

Similarly, for several securities, including Bihar SGS 2044 and Assam SGS 2036, the acceptance rates for non-competitive bidders were near complete, highlighting strong investor appetite regardless of primary offering mechanisms.

Weighted Average Yields Set Benchmarks

The auction results revealed a range of weighted average yields across various state obligations. The Chhattisgarh SGS 2040 showed a competitive weighted average yield of 7.7010%, with the total allotment standing at ₹959.822 crore against a notified amount of ₹1000 crore.

Performance metrics were also noted for the regional bonds. For instance, MADHYA PRADESH SGS 2034 was recorded with a competitive yield of 7.39%, while its non-competitive allotment yielded a weighted average yield of 7.3859%.

Key Figures and Allocation Totals

The overall auction encompassed a wide range of securities, from those notified at ₹1000 crore to the West Bengal SGS bundle reaching a total notional value of ₹21700 crore across two tenors (9-Years and 21-Years).

While several bonds saw competitive bids accepted—such as 942 crore allocated against the Notified Amount for Assam SGS 2036 (from 34 competitive bids)—the successful execution underscores RBI's commitment to managing state financial instruments effectively. The outcomes provide a real-time view of risk appetite and prevailing yield expectations in the market on July 21, 2026.
