HCL Tech Surges Over 2% on Sovereign AI Bet: Nomura Gives Strong Buy Rating After Sarvam AI Stake

Shares of HCL Technologies Ltd rallied in early trading, climbing over 2 percent following a major strategic announcement. The surge comes after the company revealed its significant investment in homegrown artificial intelligence startup, Sarvam AI. This high-profile move has drawn considerable bullish interest from brokerage firm Nomura.

Stock Performance and Brokerage Rating

HCL Tech was seen rising sharply at ₹1,146.40 in early trading, registering a 2.4 percent gain from its previous close. The news of the investment bolstered investor confidence, prompting Nomura to reaffirm its "buy" rating on the stock. Nomura maintained strong conviction, setting a target price of ₹1,600 for the company. This target implies an upside potential exceeding 42 percent from Monday's closing price of ₹1,122.30.

Details of the Sovereign AI Investment Deal

HCL Tech announced that it would acquire a 10.46 percent stake in Sarvam AI through an investment totaling Rs 1,427 crore. This significant transaction values the Bengaluru-based startup at $1.5 billion. As of Monday evening, this deal represents the first sovereign AI investment made by an Indian IT services company.

The funding round is part of Sarvam’s Series B raise, which has already secured a first close of $234 million against a planned target of $300 million. Other investors participating in the round include Peak XV Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Khosla Ventures. The transaction is slated for completion within two weeks of signing the agreement.

Strategic Implications and Market Outlook

The partnership between HCL Tech and Sarvam AI carries substantial strategic weight. Nomura highlighted that this investment will enable HCL Tech to build industry-specific AI models and sophisticated solutions for its global client base. Furthermore, the move is set to expand Sarvam’s multilingual AI capabilities across Indian and international markets.

This collaboration accelerates the adoption of sovereign AI among enterprises and governments requiring secure, localized AI systems. Sarvam AI itself develops frontier artificial intelligence across language, speech, vision, and document processing. HCL Tech confirmed that the investment will support next-generation AI research in areas like agentic AI, coding, and cybersecurity use cases.
