BJP MP Flags Risks of AI-Driven Job Losses and Social Disruption at AI Impact Summit
New Delhi, February 17: BJP MP and former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has called for the creation of a new global governance framework to regulate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the use of critical minerals, warning that existing international institutions are not equipped to address the challenges posed by futuristic technologies.Speaking at the AI Impact Summit in the national capital, Shringla, a member of the Rajya Sabha, said global bodies including the United Nations and the World Trade Organization are not structured to manage the complexities of rapidly advancing technologies.
Existing Global Institutions Not Prepared for Future Technologies
Shringla said that while the world has established governance systems through institutions like the United Nations and the WTO, these frameworks are not designed to deal with technologies that define the future. He questioned how emerging domains such as artificial intelligence and critical mineral use can be effectively regulated at the international level. According to him, there is a need to ensure that countries share responsibilities and adopt mechanisms that promote responsible use of AI.
He emphasized the importance of building a global governance structure that can address regulatory gaps both nationally and internationally.
AI Disruptions Could Trigger Employment Concerns and Social Unrest
Highlighting the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence, Shringla pointed to concerns about employment displacement. He said there is growing anxiety in the country over the possibility that AI-driven automation could render many jobs redundant. He also referred to the misuse of AI in social media, citing examples such as fake messages, morphed images, and misleading posts that could lead to societal incidents and unrest.
Drawing parallels with syndicated cyber crime operations, he stressed the need for coordinated global oversight to manage risks associated with emerging technologies.
India Pushes for Balanced AI Regulations Globally
Shringla’s remarks come amid intensifying global debates on AI ethics and governance. India has been advocating for balanced regulatory frameworks in international forums, aiming to harness the benefits of AI while addressing associated risks.Atal Innovation Mission Expands Innovation and Incubation Network
