Government Speeds Up Gas Distribution Reforms, Boosts LPG Supply Amid Global Uncertainty
New Delhi, March 22: The government has stepped up efforts to streamline gas distribution and ease supply pressures by accelerating city gas project approvals and increasing commercial LPG allocations, even as global geopolitical challenges persist.Fast-Track Approval for City Gas Projects
In a move aimed at expanding piped natural gas infrastructure, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation has directed its offices to process City Gas Distribution applications within 10 days. The initiative is expected to speed up the rollout of piped natural gas networks across urban regions.Commercial LPG users in major cities have also been advised to shift to piped natural gas as part of a broader push to reduce reliance on liquefied petroleum gas.
Domestic LPG Supply Remains Stable
The government has confirmed that domestic LPG supply remains stable, with no shortages reported at distribution centres. Delivery operations continue normally across the country, with most transactions being completed through the Delivery Authentication Code system. Panic-driven bookings have also subsided.Commercial LPG Allocation Raised to 50 Percent
To support high-demand sectors, the government has gradually increased commercial LPG allocations. After restoring 20 percent supply earlier, an additional 10 percent allocation linked to PNG expansion reforms was announced on March 18. A further 20 percent was approved on March 21, taking the total allocation to 50 percent. The enhanced supply prioritizes key sectors such as restaurants, dhabas, hotels, industrial canteens, food processing units, dairy operations, community kitchens, and subsidized food outlets run by state governments and local bodies. Provisions have also been made for 5 kg cylinders to support migrant workers.
Implementation Across States Gains Momentum
Revised allocation guidelines have already been implemented in around 20 states and Union Territories. In other regions, public sector oil marketing companies are continuing to supply commercial LPG.Over the past eight days, commercial entities have lifted approximately 15,440 tonnes of LPG, indicating steady demand and improved supply flow.
Priority Supply for Essential Services
Educational institutions and hospitals continue to receive priority, accounting for nearly half of the total commercial LPG allocation, ensuring uninterrupted services in critical sectors.Supply Situation Under Control
Despite ongoing global uncertainties impacting energy supply chains, the government maintains that domestic availability remains under control, while policy efforts continue to encourage a gradual transition of urban consumers towards piped natural gas.Disclaimer: Due care and diligence have been taken in compiling and presenting news and market-related content.
