Strategic Push Under Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti to Improve Cargo Movement

New Delhi, April 3: In a significant move to strengthen port-led infrastructure, the government has approved a ₹132.51 crore project for constructing a Road Over Bridge at LC-235 within the Deendayal Port Authority at Kandla.

The project has been cleared by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and is being executed by Western Railway on a deposit basis.

Key Infrastructure Upgrade to Ease Congestion at Deendayal Port

The proposed Road Over Bridge is aimed at resolving critical logistical challenges at the port by ensuring seamless movement across an existing rail crossing. The development is expected to eliminate bottlenecks, enabling uninterrupted cargo flow and improving overall operational efficiency.

Once completed, the project is set to reduce congestion significantly while accelerating cargo evacuation, strengthening the port’s handling capacity.

Alignment with Sagarmala Programme and PM Gati Shakti Plan

The infrastructure project forms an integral part of the government’s Sagarmala Programme and is aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. These initiatives are focused on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and improving logistics efficiency across India.

The proposal was recently reviewed by the Delegated Investment Board in a meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The revised project cost was assessed to ensure adherence to updated safety standards and technical requirements.

Government Focus on Integrated Infrastructure Development

Highlighting the importance of the project, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated that the Road Over Bridge will help remove critical bottlenecks, improve cargo movement, and enhance logistics efficiency.

He emphasized that the development reflects the government’s commitment to building modern and seamless port connectivity, supporting trade growth, and advancing India’s position as a global maritime hub.

Push for Better Coordination Through Gati Shakti Portal

In line with the broader vision of integrated infrastructure development, the Ministry has directed all major ports to map their projects on the PM Gati Shakti portal. This step is expected to improve coordination among agencies and accelerate execution of multi-modal connectivity projects across the country.

The initiative aims to ensure synchronized infrastructure development, further strengthening India’s logistics ecosystem.
