Google Breaks Ground on $15 Billion AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, Catalyzing India's Digital Ecosystem

Google has officially broken ground on its landmark AI hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. This project marks the start of the company's largest investment in India's digital future to date, establishing a gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem designed to power the ambitions of Viksit Bharat.

The groundbreaking ceremony, which was held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, was a major event highlighting the strategic partnership between Google, AdaniConneX, and Nxtra by Airtel.

Massive Digital Investment Blueprint

The development represents a significant portion of Google's $15 billion investment planned over five years (2026-2030) to establish a comprehensive AI ecosystem in India. This initiative aligns with the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The project includes three data center campuses, making it India's first gigawatt-scale AI hub. AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel are leading the construction of the data center buildings and connecting infrastructure.

The AI hub is further supported by the America-India Connect initiative for an expanded fiber-optic network and a clean energy strategy, which aims to bring new clean energy supply to the electricity grid. This effort supports India's national goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Through their involvement, Bharti Airtel Limited, via its executive vice chairman Gopal Vittal, noted that the company will help advance India's digital ambitions. He highlighted that the combination of Airtel’s full stack of best-in-class data centers, green power usage, pan-India ultra-low latency fiber, and a next-gen cable landing station will enable large-scale, world-class AI infrastructure in Vizag.

Leadership Vision for AI Growth

Key figures attending the ceremony emphasized the project's national significance.

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon'ble Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, stated that the groundbreaking ceremony reflects the Prime Minister's vision of making India a global technology leader. He added that the India AI Hub and three subsea cables landing in Visakhapatnam will become very important infrastructure for the country's journey forward.

Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, called Andhra Pradesh India's premier investment destination, stating that Google's AI hub will be a cornerstone of the state's growing tech corridor. He emphasized that the partnership reflects a commitment to combining cutting-edge innovation with inclusive growth.

Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, described the groundbreaking as an "inflection point for the country's AI-native future." He noted that together, they are laying the foundation for Viksit Bharat, with the Google AI hub serving as a catalyst for growth.

Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Group, highlighted the infrastructural importance, stating, "India's AI moment will be defined by infrastructure. What we are building in Visakhapatnam, nearly 1 GW in a single location, signals that shift."

Focusing on the AI Corridor and Local Economy

The ceremony was accompanied by the Bharat AI Shakti Conclave, themed 'Collaborating to Deliver India's AI Corridor.' The Conclave focused on translating Google's anchor investment into a tangible economic value chain for the region. The initiative aims to facilitate capacity building by prioritizing a local-first procurement approach and integrating local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) under global operational frameworks.

Community Development and Livelihood Focus

Beyond industrial scale, the Google India AI hub also features substantial long-term investments in local job training and community resilience. Google announced several community development initiatives in Visakhapatnam:

  • Securing Water Futures: Google is partnering with Sponge Collaborative to launch a watershed management and community empowerment plan. This addresses hydrological stress by linking watershed restoration with community needs such as clean drinking water systems (Reverse Osmosis plants and 'Water ATMs') and improving livelihoods in local agriculture and fisheries.
  • Modernizing Maritime Trades: A strategic partnership with the Sambhav Foundation will equip over 1,000 individuals from the fishing community with GPS navigation and weather-forecasting applications. The program also provides training in cold-chain management and value-added processing, alongside financial literacy training via UPI.
  • Empowering Grassroots Innovation: Through the Google Udaan India Fund, grants are provided to local schools and social enterprises to advance projects like AI-led skilling labs, digital literacy programs, and local entrepreneurship.
  • Scaling Women-Led Enterprises: The NARI Shakti program, in collaboration with the Learning Links Foundation, supports women from low-income backgrounds. This incubator program provides targeted training in financial literacy and business planning, aiming to establish and grow micro-enterprises.
  • Building a Future-Ready Workforce: Google introduced the Skills Trade and Readiness (STAR) program to create sustainable career paths. This program aims to prepare over 1,000 people in high-demand fields like construction, welding, and facility operations. Additionally, Google is partnering with ICT Academy to train 1,200+ local students and educators in specialized tracks in cloud computing and generative AI.
