Gold Slips Amid Strong Dollar as Markets Await Federal Reserve's Crucial Interest Rate Decision

Gold prices edged lower on Tuesday, trading at $4,056.03 per ounce by 0110 GMT. The decline was largely attributed to a firmer dollar, as traders focused their attention on the upcoming policy meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed). This focus intensifies expectations regarding future interest rate movements.

Gold and Precious Metals Performance

Spot gold futures for August delivery slipped 0.5% to $4,056.70. Meanwhile, other key precious metals saw modest declines across the board. Spot silver fell by 1.7%, hitting $57.39 per ounce. Platinum also registered a slide, falling 0.8% to $1,608.20, while palladium slid 1.5% to $1,272.25.

Dollar Strength and Fed Meeting Expectations

The dollar held near a one-month high as the market absorbed signs of potential rate action from the central bank. The U.S. Federal Reserve is scheduled to begin its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday, with expectations that interest rates will remain steady during the session.

Market sentiment suggests increasing probability for future rate hikes. CME FedWatch data indicates that the chance of a rate hike of at least 25 basis points stands at 36.3%, up from 16% a week prior. Furthermore, markets are currently pricing in an 81% likelihood of a hike during the central bank's September meeting.

Geopolitical Tensions and Commodity Market Response

Geopolitical instability provided another layer of context for the commodity markets. President Donald Trump mentioned on Monday that the United States was having constructive talks with Iran regarding their conflict, suggesting a chance for a deal. However, he simultaneously warned that U.S. strikes would resume if negotiations faltered.

Despite this diplomatic optimism, Tehran quickly tested military pauses. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq all reported drone attacks in response on Monday, underscoring the persistent tensions in the region.

China's Gold Imports and Mining Developments

In related commodity news, data from Hong Kong's Census and Statistics Department showed that China's net gold imports via Hong Kong more than doubled year-on-year in June. However, these imports slipped over 5% compared to the previous month. Separately, Gold Fields announced on Monday that it has submitted a lease renewal proposal for its Tarkwa gold mine in Ghana.
