Gadkari Assures: Legacy Vehicles Show No Performance Drop Running on E20 Fuel​

Ministerial Findings Clear Performance Concerns Over Ethanol Blended Petrol​

Nitin Gadkari addressed the Rajya Sabha today, emphatically assuring that studies conducted into vehicle compatibility confirm no significant adverse impact on the performance or wear and tear of older vehicles when running on E20 fuel. The Minister stated that while certain concerns have surfaced among motorists regarding fuel efficiency, scientific reviews have mitigated these worries.

Gadkari clarified that BS-III vehicles, which were introduced starting April 1, 2005 and manufactured before 2016, may require the replacement of specific rubber parts and gaskets when operating on E20. This maintenance requirement is necessary to ensure optimal operation with the blended fuel.

The Minister tackled the issue of mileage concerns directly. He stated that industry experts have clarified that a vehicle's mileage is influenced by multiple factors beyond the type of fuel used. These crucial determinants include proper driving habits, routine maintenance such as oil changes and air filter cleanliness, correct tyre pressure and alignment, and the operational load of the air conditioning system.

Inter-Ministerial Study Validates E20 Compatibility​

A dedicated inter-ministerial committee was formed in December 2020 under NITI Aayog to thoroughly examine the vehicle compatibility and efficiency aspects related to ethanol blending. This initiative sought to scientifically validate the transition to E20 fuel.

The study conducted by the committee received support from leading research bodies, including Indian Oil, the Automotive Research Association of India, and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Gadkari noted that the findings of this report were established prior to the official introduction of E20 fuel.

Industry Rejects Claims of Widespread Engine Failure​

Addressing public anxiety, Gadkari pointed out that industry bodies have not reported widespread issues of engine failure or vehicle breakdown directly attributable to ethanol blending. He acknowledged that performance and mileage concerns regarding E20 have largely originated through social media discourse and various forms of public commentary.

Automakers and dealers maintain that there is no evidence of pervasive engine damage caused solely by the introduction of E20 fuel, despite consumer complaints about a drop in fuel efficiency.

Future Transition and Regulatory Path​

The government's approach to ethanol blending has been described as phased, scientifically validated, consultative, and calibrated. This managed rollout acknowledges the need for steady transition across the automotive sector.

Looking ahead, it was reported that the government is likely to adopt E25 petrol in a calculated manner after consulting with various industry stakeholders. This planned progression takes place amid ongoing discussions concerning the impact of higher ethanol blends on fuel performance and overall efficiency.
