AI and Big Data Strengthen Power Sector Capabilities, Says CAG K Sanjay Murthy​

New Delhi, February 23: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India, K Sanjay Murthy, said on Monday that the increasing use of artificial intelligence and big data analytics is enhancing the power sector’s ability to address its inherent complexities.

Speaking at the National Conference on the Power Sector in the national capital, Murthy noted that advancements in technology are playing a pivotal role in the ongoing transformation of the sector. He emphasized that the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and data-driven analytics is strengthening decision-making and operational management across generation, transmission, and distribution.

Power Generation Rises to 1,824 BU in FY26​

Highlighting the sector’s progress over the past decade, Murthy said power generation has increased significantly from 1,168 billion units in 2015-16 to 1,824 billion units in 2025-26.

He also pointed to a structural shift in the energy mix, with a growing focus on green energy. The share of green power has risen from 6 percent to 24 percent, reflecting the sector’s transition toward cleaner sources of generation.

Transmission Network Crosses 5 Lakh Circuit Km​

On the infrastructure front, the transmission network has expanded by more than 70 percent over the period. The country has achieved a milestone by crossing over 5 lakh circuit kilometres of transmission lines, strengthening grid connectivity and reliability.

Murthy also noted substantial progress on the distribution front, particularly in village and household electrification.

DISCOMs Record Rs 2,701 Crore Profit in FY25​

Referring to the financial health of distribution companies, Murthy said there are early signs of recovery in the sector. DISCOMs recorded a profit after tax of Rs 2,701 crore in 2024-25.

He stressed that enhancing operational efficiencies and ensuring the financial sustainability of DISCOMs must remain a priority through focused and sustained efforts.

National Conference Brings Key Power Sector Stakeholders Together​

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India is organizing the day-long National Conference on the Power Sector to facilitate discussions on recent developments across power generation, transmission, and distribution.

The conference is attended by the Secretary, Ministry of Power; Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy; Chairperson of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission; Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority; and heads of major public sector undertakings including NTPC, NHPC, SECI, Power Finance Corporation, Grid-India, and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.

Murthy said the conference aims to bring together ministries, regulators, public sector enterprises across central and state levels, academia, and CAG officers to deliberate on sectoral challenges and opportunities.

At the conclusion of the conference, a comprehensive audit plan will be presented to support the national vision for the power sector and contribute to the shared goal of Viksit Bharat.
