Jhansi, January 15: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has commenced the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project, marking a key milestone in its expanding role in India’s railway propulsion ecosystem.

The first set of traction transformers was flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi manufacturing facility, underscoring the company’s growing capabilities in advanced rail transportation technologies. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project is being executed by a BHEL-led consortium in partnership with TRSL.

The newly supplied traction transformers are designed for semi-high-speed operations, supporting operational speeds of up to 160 kmph with a design capability of 180 kmph. These units will be dispatched to Kolkata for final integration and assembly of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train rakes. Earlier, traction converters for the same project were supplied from BHEL’s Bengaluru unit, highlighting the multi-location manufacturing approach adopted for the programme.

Alongside traction transformers, BHEL has also developed and manufactured traction motors for the project at its Bhopal facility, further strengthening its portfolio in indigenous propulsion systems for modern trainsets. The development positions the company firmly in the semi-high-speed propulsion segment, which is expected to play a critical role in the next phase of railway modernisation in the country.

Separately, BHEL’s Jhansi plant has secured an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles, expanding its footprint beyond conventional rolling stock equipment. These specialised vehicles are designed for construction, inspection, repair, and upkeep of railway tracks, enhancing safety, ride comfort, and asset longevity while reducing dependence on manual processes. The Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles will be fully designed and manufactured at the Jhansi unit.

With continued progress in indigenising complex locomotive and distributed power technologies, BHEL remains a key contributor to India’s self-reliance drive in the transportation and rolling stock segments, catering to both passenger mobility and railway infrastructure needs.
