Balrampur Bioyug Wins Green Bioplastic Supply Contract

New Delhi, February 23: Leading sugar manufacturer Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd has secured its first large institutional order for green bioplastic products from the Lucknow Cantonment Board, marking a key milestone in its diversification into sustainable materials.

The order has been awarded to the company’s PLA division, Balrampur Bioyug, and includes the supply of compostable garbage bags in two sizes, 300 ml PLA bottles, 3D printed PLA compostable pens, and PLA folders. All products are manufactured from renewable, bio based Poly Lactic Acid, a 100 percent compostable material designed to leave no microplastics behind while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

PLA Plant in Uttar Pradesh Nears Operational Phase

Headquartered in Kolkata, Balrampur Chini has expanded into the bioplastics segment and is setting up a dedicated PLA manufacturing facility in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes and is expected to become operational in October this year.

The company described the institutional order as a significant development for its emerging biopolymer business, reflecting growing acceptance of sustainable alternatives in large scale public systems.

Institutional Shift Toward Bio Based Alternatives

The Lucknow Cantonment, which spans 6,760 acres, functions under the administrative control of the Director General of Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The board’s adoption of compostable PLA products signals a transition from fossil based materials to bio based solutions, particularly amid rising concerns over single use plastics and microplastic contamination.

Commenting on the development, Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, said the order represents institutional trust in India’s emerging biopolymer capabilities and underscores that compostable PLA products are now credible, performance oriented solutions suitable for large scale institutional use.

Diversified Operations Beyond Sugar

Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd remains one of India’s largest integrated sugar companies, operating ten sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh with a combined sugarcane crushing capacity of 80,000 tonnes per day. The company also runs distillery operations with a capacity of 1,050 kilo litres per day and co generation facilities of 175.7 MW.

The latest institutional contract strengthens Balrampur Chini’s strategic push into sustainable manufacturing while complementing its established presence in sugar, distillery, and co generation businesses.
