ATF Prices Cross ₹2 Lakh Mark for First Time; Commercial LPG Rates Hiked by ₹195.50
Jet Fuel Prices Surge Over 114% Amid Global Oil Spike
New Delhi, April 1: Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have more than doubled to a record high on Wednesday, crossing the ₹2 lakh per kilolitre mark for the first time, as global oil prices continue to surge amid escalating tensions in West Asia.In Delhi, ATF prices were increased by ₹110,703.08 per kilolitre, marking a sharp rise of 114.5%, taking the rate to ₹207,341.22 per kl, according to state-owned fuel retailers.
This is the highest-ever level for jet fuel prices. The previous peak was recorded in 2022, when rates had surged to around ₹1.1 lakh per kl following the spike in oil prices after the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Second Consecutive Monthly Increase Adds Pressure on Airlines
The latest revision marks the second consecutive monthly increase. On March 1, ATF prices were raised by 5.7%, equivalent to ₹5,244.75 per kl.The sharp increase is expected to further strain airline operations. Carriers are already facing higher fuel consumption due to longer flight routes and rerouting caused by airspace closures linked to the ongoing conflict. Fuel typically accounts for nearly 40% of an airline’s operating costs.
Commercial LPG Prices Also Increased
Alongside jet fuel, commercial LPG prices have also been raised significantly. The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has been increased by ₹195.50, bringing the total cost to ₹2,078.50 per cylinder in Delhi.
This follows a previous hike of ₹114.50 per cylinder on March 1.
Domestic LPG Prices Remain Unchanged
In contrast, domestic LPG prices have not been revised in this cycle. The cost of a 14.2-kg household cylinder remains at ₹913 in Delhi. The last increase of ₹60 per cylinder was implemented on March 7.Fuel Price Revisions Linked to Global Benchmarks
State-run oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum revise ATF and LPG prices on the first day of every month. These revisions are based on international fuel benchmarks and fluctuations in the exchange rate.Global Oil Prices Drive Domestic Fuel Hikes
The sharp increase in fuel prices comes as global crude oil prices have risen by nearly 50%, driven by disruptions in energy supply chains due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged. In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹94.72 per litre and diesel at ₹87.62 per litre, following a ₹2 per litre reduction implemented in March last year.
