Apollo Micro Systems Empanelled by Indian Air Force as Prime Developer for Indigenous Precision Guided Munitions

Apollo Micro Systems Limited (AMS) has secured a critical contract win after being formally empanelled by the Indian Air Force (IAF) as a Prime Development Agency (DA) for the Indigenous Precision Range Extension Kit (IPREK) programme. This achievement marks AMS’s significant entry into India's high-value precision guided munition (PGM) segment, a sector that has historically relied heavily on imports.

The empanelment, conducted under the Make-II (Industry Funded) category of India's Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, recognizes AMS as the capable entity to design and deliver a precision guided weapon system entirely from Indian soil. This development is pivotal for the nation’s defense manufacturing ecosystem.

The IPREK programme focuses on transforming existing General Purpose (GP) 500 Kg unguided bombs into long-range precision glide weapons. A weapon equipped with the IPREK can be released from a standoff distance of over 80 to 100 kilometres and still impact within 3 metres of its intended target, fundamentally changing mission risk calculus for carrier aircraft.

The technology integration forming the core of the IPREK is highly advanced. It integrates India's indigenous NavIC (IRNSS) satellite navigation system, making it one of the first weapon systems globally to rely on the Indian satellite constellation. The kit also incorporates Electro-Optical (EO) and Infrared (IIR) terminal guidance for day/night precision, alongside Digital Scene Matching (DSMAC) terminal guidance, which ensures functionality in GPS-denied environments.

The strategic importance of the IPREK programme is multi-dimensional. It directly addresses the nation's reliance on imported precision guided munitions, turning the IAF’s existing bomb inventory into a strategic asset rather than a sunk cost. The capability provides a crucial force multiplier by allowing strikes from extreme standoff ranges.

The initial procurement phase for IPREK involves over 500 units, setting up a durable, multi-year revenue opportunity for AMS. Beyond the IPREK programme, AMS’s extensive GNC technology, along with its CEMILAC-certified airworthiness credentials and NavIC integration expertise, positions it as a strong contender for future indigenous precision weapon programmes across the Army, Navy, and IAF.

AMS has built a 41-year track record in defense technology. As a pioneer in this field, the company specializes in the design and manufacture of advanced electronic, electro-mechanical, and engineering systems for India's Armed Forces. AMS holds a valid Defence Industrial Licence and is certified to AS9100 Rev D (Aerospace Quality). The company has previously delivered mission-critical guidance navigation kits for DRDO programmes including Pinaka and TARA.
