Ambani and Mittal Lead Charge as Global Commission is Formed to Guarantee Trustworthy AI for All
Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and Bharti Enterprises founder Sunil Bharti Mittal have joined a newly established global body tasked with steering the responsible development and adoption of artificial intelligence. This commission convenes over 40 world leaders, technology executives, and heads of multilateral organizations to define pathways for trustworthy and inclusive AI deployment globally. The launch of the AI for Good Global Commission was announced on July 3 by Rwanda President Paul Kagame, Salesforce chair Marc Benioff, and ITU secretary-general Doreen Bogdan-Martin. The initiative aims to bridge the divide between governments, industry leaders, and international institutions as nations strive to harness AI while addressing critical concerns regarding safety and equitable access.
Establishing Trust and Bridging the Digital Divide
The commission is designed to ensure that Artificial Intelligence benefits developing economies and does not inadvertently widen existing digital divides. A core priority of the group will be expanding digital connectivity and enabling broader participation in the emerging AI economy, especially given that an estimated 2.2 billion people remain offline.President Kagame emphasized that technology must be a force for good, stating they have a responsibility to utilize it accordingly. Marc Benioff added that the promise of AI relies not just on its economic potential but fundamentally on building trust to enable responsible deployment across all sectors.
High-Profile Membership in AI Governance
Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal are among the high-profile founding members who constitute this powerful group. The commission includes industry heavyweights such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, and Google president James Manyika.Other key participants include Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet, Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle, and Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez. This collective underscores the massive scale of global commitment to responsible AI innovation.
Future Roadmap: AI for Good Summit 2026
The AI for Good Global Commission represents a crucial collaborative effort, built upon the previous work conducted by the ITU-UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development. Doreen Bogdan-Martin noted that no single organization can ensure that AI benefits humanity alone, stressing the vital need for collaboration among businesses, governments, and international bodies. The commission's inaugural meeting is slated to occur during the AI for Good Global Summit 2026. This major event is scheduled for July 7-10 in Geneva and will run as part of the Geneva Digital Week, which will also host the WSIS Forum 2026 and the first UN-mandated Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
