Amagi Reports Global FAST Growth of 55% YoY, Highlights Metadata as Key Operational Friction Point

NEW YORK - July 1st, 2026 - Amagi Media Labs Limited released the June 2026 edition of its AIRTIME Report, a quarterly analysis covering global trends in Free Ad-supported Streaming TV (FAST). The report, which draws data from approximately 6,500 FAST channel deliveries distributed via the company's server-side ad insertion (SSAI) platform, THUNDERSTORM, shows robust growth across the industry while underscoring the escalating challenges posed by metadata quality in the value chain.

Global hours of viewing (HOV) increased by 55% year-over-year among channels tracked in this edition, and ad impressions rose by 53%. The U.S. and Canada represented the largest market segment, contributing 54% of global HOV and 74% of total global ad impressions. Latin America (LATAM) demonstrated particularly strong regional growth, with HOV up 190% and ad impressions increasing by 124%, supported by Amagi's expanded portfolio and new high-viewership channel additions.

Entertainment remained the dominant genre globally, accounting for 41% of classified HOV and 40% of ad impressions. News content secured 27% of HOV but provided strong monetization at 33% of ad impressions. Kids emerged as a rapidly growing segment, reporting a 191% rise in HOV and a 118% increase in ad impressions year-over-year.

Metadata Reckoning: Survey Reveals Operational Drag

The June 2026 AIRTIME Report focuses heavily on the operational and commercial costs associated with poor metadata across the FAST and media value chain. The report features findings from a focused pulse survey involving 28 senior practitioners spanning content owners, channel operators, broadcasters, ad-side teams, and technology vendors.

Key insights derived from the survey illustrate significant industry pain points regarding data quality and operational complexity:

Finding AreaPercentage of RespondentsDetails
Operational Drag86%Reformatting metadata to meet various platform requirements is cited as the single biggest operational burden.
Cost of Poor Metadata86%Practitioners report that poor metadata results in lost ad revenue, weaker discovery, or platforms deprioritizing their content.
Incomplete Data71%Respondents stated that metadata arriving from content owners is incomplete, often missing essential elements like genres, ratings, imagery, or episode data.

Furthermore, the survey shed light on the future role of AI in addressing these quality gaps:

AreaPercentage of RespondentsExpectation Timeline
AI for Synopses/Tags57%Believe AI can reliably generate synopses and tags.
AI Generation Handling Most Data68%Expect AI to handle most metadata generation with minimal human oversight within three years.
Platform Dictating Standards68%Expect major streaming platforms, not content owners, to dictate metadata standards within three years.

Regarding future investment to improve data quality, better AI tooling (in-house or vendor) was the primary focus for 32% of respondents, followed by building in-house metadata capability at 25%.

Expert Analysis on Structural Tensions

Gavin Bridge, Chief Analyst at FASTMaster, provided analysis identifying three core structural tensions fueling the metadata challenge: the format delivery "tax" as the dominant source of friction; distributors struggling between incomplete supply-side inputs and fragmented platform demand; and the increasing reliance of discovery layers on AI agents that require richly structured data.

Bridge concluded that the strategically vital attribute for content owners is creating metadata that can be consumed by AI agents, warning that poor metadata may become invisible to recommending systems even if it appears correct in a grid layout.

Srinivasan KA, Co-founder and President - Global Business at Amagi, commented on the report’s implications, stating, "FAST has earned its place at the centre of the modern media stack. What this report makes clear is that the next competitive edge isn't reach; it's operational precision." He added that metadata serves as the convergence point for ad revenue, discovery, and audience intelligence.

The Amagi AIRTIME Report is the 17th quarterly publication, providing comprehensive insights into FAST channel trends, ad market dynamics, and media operations analysis across the global industry.
