Alphabet Shares Tumble as Massive Capex Plan Overshadows Record Google Cloud Surge Amid AI Delays

Google parent company Alphabet reported another strong quarter, highlighted by explosive growth in its cloud computing division. However, investor scrutiny mounted following announcements regarding a substantial increase in capital expenditure plans and lingering uncertainties over flagship AI model timelines.

Shares of the search giant saw volatility after the earnings call, eventually dipping as the finance chief revealed the increased capex commitment. This development added pressure to an already complex quarter for Alphabet, despite its strong revenue performances across multiple segments.

Google Cloud Drives Stellar Growth Despite Cash Flow Concerns

Revenue at Google Cloud surged by 82% to $24.8 billion during the quarter ending June. This massive growth was driven by acute demand from AI-hungry enterprises globally. Analysts on average anticipated a 64% increase, making Alphabet significantly outperform expectations in this critical area.

Total revenue for the quarter reached $119.8 billion, surpassing the consensus estimate of $116.9 billion. Furthermore, advertising revenue came in strong at $81.6 billion compared to estimated figures of $81.1 billion.

Increased Capex Plan Signals Massive Future Investment

Alphabet's finance chief, Anat Ashkenazi, announced that the company now expects to spend between $195 billion and $205 billion on capital expenditures. This marks a significant increase from the previous guidance of $180 billion to $190 billion for the current year.

Ashkenazi justified the elevated spending by stating that "We have increased our capacity quite significantly over the past three years. The demand still outpaces that investment." She noted that faster-than-expected delivery of capacity contributed to the upward revision.

Financial Setbacks Despite Strong Revenue Gains

While revenue was robust, adjusted profit per share at $2.85 slightly missed Wall Street projections of $2.89. More critically, the company reported negative free cash flow for the first time in its history, burning $5.9 billion during the quarter.

Thomas Monteiro, senior analyst at Investing.com, commented on this trend, stating that "The market's most reliable cash generators are now spending more than they bring in." He added that capital has a real cost and the room for error is shrinking quarterly.

AI Model Uncertainty Tempers Tech Triumph

Despite Google Cloud’s strong performance, Alphabet faced investor jitters stemming from delays surrounding its next flagship AI model, Gemini 3.5 Pro. This delay has left Google trailing competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI in enterprise-focused model rollouts.

During the earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai addressed these concerns, acknowledging areas for improvement. He noted that "coding and agentic coding is an example" of attributes where the company needed to improve.

Pichai confirmed that while testing Gemini 3.5 Pro, Google had also begun training Gemini 4, dedicating substantial compute and effort to remain competitive in the market.

Industry Perspective on Tech Spending and Competition

The third-largest cloud services provider is seeing massive demand as companies race to secure capacity for AI development. Alphabet has secured major deals with firms, including Anthropic. The increased revenue recognition from direct TPU chip sales also provided a notable component of growth.

Analysts continue to monitor the competitive landscape. Big Tech is projected to spend over $700 billion this year on AI, with Morgan Stanley estimating that spending could exceed $1 trillion in the coming year.

Alphabet shares have been among top performers in the "Magnificent 7" group this year, yet concerns over Gemini delays and regulatory pressures have nevertheless dragged the stock down about 9% since the end of April.
