
UP Cabinet Approves 20 MW Floating Solar Plant in Gorakhpur
Lucknow, March 23 — The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved a proposal to set up a 20 MW floating solar power plant at Chilua Tal in Gorakhpur, marking a significant step in the state’s renewable energy push.The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Gorakhpur to Be Developed as Solar City
State Energy and Urban Development Minister A.K. Sharma said the project aligns with the government’s broader plan to promote solar energy and transform urban centres into solar hubs.He noted that Gorakhpur is being developed as a “solar city,” with the floating solar plant at Chilua Tal forming a key part of this initiative.
Coal India to Execute Floating Solar Project
The 20 MW floating solar facility will be set up by Coal India Ltd.Approximately 80 acres of land have been allocated by the district administration and handed over to the company for the project. The total project cost is currently under assessment.
Ayodhya Leads as UP’s First Solar City
The minister highlighted that Ayodhya has already been developed as the state’s first solar city.Additionally, a statewide campaign is underway to develop 16 more municipal corporations along similar lines, further strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy infrastructure.
UP Expands Floating Solar Capacity
Uttar Pradesh has already implemented floating solar projects, including a 20 MW plant in Auraiya and an 11 MW facility in Khurja in Bulandshahr district.The new Gorakhpur project is expected to enhance the state’s clean energy capacity while promoting sustainable urban development and efficient land use through water-based solar installations.
