Tata Steel Receives Stay on GST Proceedings from Jharkhand High Court

Tata Steel Limited announced on March 25, 2026, that the Hon'ble High Court of Jharkhand has granted a stay on further proceedings related to a Goods and Services Tax (GST) matter. This follows a show cause cum demand notice received by the company on June 27, 2025, from the Office of the Commissioner (Audit), Central Tax, Ranchi.

The initial notice proposed a disallowance of Input Tax Credit for the period FY2018-19 through FY2022-23, potentially impacting a GST amount of ₹1007,54,83,342. As of the date of the notice, the company had already paid ₹514,19,36,211, reducing the alleged GST exposure to ₹493,35,47,131.

Subsequently, an Adjudication Order issued on December 18, 2025, directed the payment of tax amounting to ₹493,35,47,131, along with a penalty of ₹638,82,62,185 and interest.

Tata Steel filed a Writ Petition before the Hon'ble High Court of Jharkhand on March 11, 2026, challenging the December 2025 order. The matter was heard on March 24, 2026, and the High Court has now directed a stay on all further proceedings until the next hearing date, April 15, 2026.
