Tata Steel Faces Demand Notice Over Mineral Coal Extraction at West Bokaro Colliery

Tata Steel Limited confirmed receiving a Demand Notice dated March 30, 2026, from the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, Jharkhand. The notice pertains to the extraction of mineral coal from the company's West Bokaro Colliery.

The allegations detailed in the notice suggest that approximately 1,62,40,399 MT of mineral coal was extracted in excess of permissible limits across the period spanning FY 2000-01 to FY 2006-07. This demand notice was issued by the DMO based on grounds similar to those noted in the Common Cause vs. Union of India case (WPC No. 114 of 2014).

The alleged excess production has resulted in an aggregate demand totaling ₹1755,10,54,029/-.

The Company's management stated that it believes the demand lacks justification and substantive basis. Consequently, Tata Steel Limited plans to pursue suitable legal remedies before the appropriate judicial or quasi-judicial forum.
