
South Korea and Japan Agree to Launch Regular Industry Dialogue to Strengthen Supply Chain and Trade Cooperation
New Policy Channel to Address Trade, Economic Security, and Supply Chain Issues
Seoul, March 14: South Korea and Japan have agreed to establish a regular communication channel between their industry ministries to coordinate on trade, economic security, and supply chain matters. The move is aimed at strengthening cooperation as global trade conditions and geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve.The agreement was reached during a meeting between South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan and Japanese minister Ryosei Akazawa. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the inaugural Indo-Pacific energy security ministerial meeting in Tokyo, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
Through the planned policy dialogue, the two countries intend to jointly monitor and manage a wide range of economic issues. These include trade cooperation, supply chain resilience, economic security, and collaboration in mineral resource development.
Bilateral Supply Chain Partnership Signed
During the meeting, the two sides also signed a bilateral Supply Chain Partnership Arrangement (SCPA). The agreement is designed to improve preparedness for possible supply chain disruptions while strengthening the ability of both countries to respond jointly to such challenges.Under the arrangement, Seoul and Tokyo will work to minimize unnecessary trade restrictions that could affect supply chain stability. The partnership is also expected to support cooperation in the critical minerals and resources sector.
The agreement includes plans to expand joint exploration, investment, and technology development related to critical minerals. These materials are increasingly important for industries such as advanced manufacturing, energy, and technology.
Energy Cooperation Expands with LNG Swap Agreement
Energy cooperation also formed part of the discussions. On the same day, Korea Gas Corp. and Japanese energy company JERA Co. signed an operational cooperation agreement.The agreement includes a liquefied natural gas swap arrangement between the two companies. The initiative is intended to support stable LNG supplies for both countries at a time when the global energy market remains volatile due to ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.
Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations
South Korea’s government indicated that the new initiatives will help deepen industrial and trade cooperation between the two nations. The development also comes as the two countries mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations.Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said the government will continue to promote mutually beneficial industrial and trade collaboration between South Korea and Japan as bilateral ties expand.
