Government Targets Higher Foreign Tourist Arrivals Through Airport Upgrade

Colombo, February 23 Sri Lanka is moving ahead with plans to expand Jaffna International Airport as part of a broader effort to increase foreign tourist arrivals and strengthen economic activity in the Northern Province.

Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilake said the airport expansion is aimed at supporting larger passenger aircraft and improving services for visitors traveling to the northern region.

"Currently, only flights with limited seating capacity could land at Palaly. We hope to develop the runway to land bigger passenger flights," the minister said, outlining the government's vision to upgrade infrastructure at the airport.

Runway Development to Enable Larger Aircraft Operations

At present, Jaffna International Airport handles aircraft with restricted seating capacity. The airport’s operations office confirmed that it operates 10 international flights per week from Chennai and Trichy. These flights are operated using ATR 72 category aircraft with a seating capacity of 70 passengers.

The proposed runway development is expected to allow larger passenger aircraft to land, potentially increasing the volume of international traffic to the region.

Passenger Terminal Expansion Underway

In addition to runway improvements, the government has initiated a project to expand the passenger terminal. The objective is to accommodate a higher volume of foreign tourists and enhance facilities for travelers arriving in the North.

According to the minister, the first phase of the expansion project is already underway. The second phase is scheduled to begin by June this year and is expected to be completed by July next year, as reported by NewsFirst.

Historical Significance of Jaffna International Airport

Jaffna International Airport, formerly known as Palaly Airport, was established by the British Armed Forces on 359 acres of land in Palaly. The airport’s first flight to India took place on December 10, 1947.

With the planned expansion, Sri Lanka aims to position the airport as a key gateway for international travelers heading to the northern region, supporting tourism growth and regional economic development.
